Five U.S. women receive draws for Tokyo Olympic Test Event which starts Thursday in Japan

Two-time Senior World Team member Victoria Anthony will compete in Tokyo this week.


TOKYO, Japan – All five U.S. women entered in the Ready Steady Tokyo Olympic Wrestling Test Event have received their draws for the tournament. The USA has entered five 2019 U.S. National Team members in the tournament.


This is international wrestling’s dress rehearsal event for the 2020 Tokyo Games, and will be held at Makuhari Messe Hall in Chiba (northeast Tokyo), which is where Olympic wrestling competition will take place. Every Olympic sport will have a test event prior to the Tokyo Games. Wrestling’s test event will only feature women’s freestyle.


While the brackets are small, they are loaded with talented athletes. In addition to Japan and the USA, other nations with entries include China, Ukraine, Russia and Canada.


2018 World bronze medalist Mallory Velte (Vancouver, BC, Canada/Titan Mercury WC) opens up at 62 kg/136.75 lbs. against a tough opponent, 2016 World champion and three-time World medalist Xingru Pei of China.


Two-time Senior World Team member and two-time Junior World champion Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids WC) will battle 2017 Cadet World champion Remina Yoshimoto of Japan at 50 kg/110 lbs.


2008 University World champion Katherine Shai (Denver, Colo./Titan Mercury WC/Northern Colorado WC) has drawn two-time Junior World medalist Liliya Horishna of Ukraine in her first bout at 53 kg/116.5 lbs.


2018 U23 World bronze medalist Alex Glaude (West Sacramento, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) opens against two-time World medalist Feng Zhou of China at 68 kg/149.5 lbs.


At 76 kg/167.5 lbs., Hannah Gladden (Franklin Springs, Ga./Lion WC) starts her competition against Mizuki Nagashima of Japan, a 2019 Asian Junior Championships bronze medalist.


Three weight classes, 62 kg, 68 kg, 76 kg, will be held on Thursday and Friday. The other three weight classes, compete on Friday and Saturday, 50 kg, 53 kg, 57 kg.


Anthony, Shai, Velte and Glaude are No. 2 on the National Team ladder at their respective weights, while Gladden is No. 3 at 76 kg.

Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone. At this time, USA Wrestling does not know if there is a live webstream of the event, but will post the information on its social media platforms if one becomes available.
