New York, N.Y. – The Greco-Roman finals are set at the Bill Farrell Memorial. The morning rounds were filled with big throws and some even bigger upsets.
60 kg will feature two 2019 World Team members clashing at a new weight class. Max Nowry, who finished fifth at 50 kg in Nur-Sultan this September, will face off with Ryan Mango, who finished seventh. Mango has looked excellent at his new weight class, outscoring his first three opponents, 26-1. Nowry has wrestled clutch, defeating No. 3 at 63 kg Sammy Jones, 2-1, in the semifinals.
Three-time National Team member Alex Sancho fought his way through his side of the 72 kg bracket, defeating 2006 World champion Joe Warren by technical fall, 8-0, in the quarterfinals. In the finals, he will face Hayanobu Shimizu of Japan. Shimizu knocked off the No. 2 seed Mostafa Mohamad in the semifinals. Sancho is the highest domestic placer and has earned his spot at the Olympic Team Trials this April.
The biggest upset of the day occurred at 77 kg where Jesse Porter defeated 2016 Olympic gold medalist, 2014 World gold medalist and 2018 World Silver medalist, Davor Sefanek of Serbia, 11-1. Porter would fall in the semifinals to unseeded Spencer Woods, 5-0. In the finals Woods will face Hassan Hassan Ahmed Mohamed of Egypt. With this performance, Woods earned a spot at the Olympic Team Trials.
Alan Vera, formerly of Cuba, rolled to the finals at 87 kg with two technical falls. He will face two-time Bill Farrell champion, Aliaksandr Kikiniou of Belarus in the finals. Kikiniou is a 2009 World bronze medalist.
At 97 kg, 2019 World Team member G’Angelo Hanock will see Amed Hassan of Egypt. Hassan has teched all three of his opponents without surrendering a point.
The 130 kg finals will feature 2018 World Silver medalist Adam Coon taking on two-time National Team member and current No.3 Jacob Mitchell. Coon dominated his first two matches with technical falls but had to come from behind in his semifinal match against Toby Erickson. He would prevail, 6-3. Given that Coon is already qualified for the Olympic Team Trials, Mitchell has now earned a spot at the Trials.
The medal round will begin at 6:00 pm and will be streamed live on Flowrestling.
