Eubanks wins his pool, Woods, Brackett also unbeaten on day one of Malar Cupen in Sweden

VASTERAS, Sweden – Three U.S. Greco-Roman athletes went undefeated on Saturday, and seven remain in the hunt for medals in the Malar Cupen, which began Saturday.


This annual competition, which features a number of top European nations, uses the two-pool, double elimination vertical brackets format, guaranteeing every athlete at least two bouts


At 97 kg/211.5 lbs., Timothy Eubanks (Sparks, Nev./NMU-OTS) won two matches and has clinched first-place in Pool A of his weight class. He defeated both athletes who are still alive in the pool. He beat Benjamin Sjöstrand of Sweden, 12-3 and scored a technical fall over Kostas Chasapis of Greece, 8-0. His opponent in the finals will be determined in Pool B in the morning.


At 77 kg/169.5 lbs, past U.S. Open runner-up Spencer Woods (Kotzebue, Alaska/New York AC/NMU-OTS) won both of his pool matches on Saturday in dominant fashion. He beat Emil Bertzel of Sweden by techincal fall. 9-0, and pinned Ruhullah Kharoti of Sweden in 30 seconds. His next opponent is Pepes Panagiotis of Greece. Woods still has at least one match in Pool B of his weight class, which has four wrestlers still alive in the bracket.


Also unbeaten with a 1-0 record at 82 kg/180.5 lbs. is Tommy Brackett (Memphis, Tenn./NMU-OTS), who beat Kim Stenberg of Sweden, 5-3. Next up for Brackett is Martin Gistorp of Sweden.


Still in the hunt with one loss after day one are Sean Sesnan (Watertown, Tenn./NMU-OTS) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Logan Hatch (Colorado Springs, Colo./EAP) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. , Nate Grimes (Keller, Texas/NMU-OTS) at 77 kg/169.5 lbs. and Tommy Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 82 kg/180.5 lbs.


A group of U.S. youth wrestlers are also competing in the age-group divisions of the tournament.
