Several National Team members and two Div. III teams headed to the Sassari City Matteo Pellicone Memorial in Sassari, Italy, May 23-25

2018 World bronze medalist Mallory Velte will be competing next week in Sassari, Italy.
A roster including three top women wrestlers, one of the U.S.’ best Greco athletes, and two men’s college teams will be headed to compete at the Sassari City Matteo Pellicone Memorial in Sassari, Italy, May 23-25.
‘The Sassari’ is a UWW Ranking Series Event for all three styles. After the Sassari, there will only be one more Ranking Series event for each style.
The three women representing the U.S. will be 2012 Olympian and two-time World Team member Kelsey Campbell and 2018 World bronze medalists Mallory Velte and Tamyra Mensah-Stock. Velte and Mensah-Stock are currently both top three in the UWW Ranking Series standings.
2017 Junior World bronze medalist and two-time Senior World Team member G’Angelo Hancock will be looking to pick up even more UWW Ranking Series points in Italy. The Sunkist Kids wrestler currently sits at third in the UWW Rankings Series standings with 48 points. Three-time Greco-Roman National Team member Josef Rau will be competing as well.
Joining these talented athletes will be Division III teams Case Western Reserve University and John Carroll University. The two universities will join as one team to represent Cleveland-Ohio-USA.
“We have been planning an international trip for two years now and for it to be right around the corner is surreal,” said CWRU head coach Danny Song. “What is unique about this event is that it was recently named a United World Wrestling Championships Ranking event. With that being said, we were required to apply for licenses to compete on behalf of our USA Wrestling national office as Team USA. This is a something that no CWRU program has done before and we are excited to blaze this trail and pave the wave for future Spartan Wrestlers. In addition to competing in Sassari City, we will also be training at the Italian Olympic Training Center.”
You are able to check back at athletics.case.edu throughout the trip for photos from the trip and updated diary entries from the athletes.
Wrestling will begin Thursday, May 23, at 10 a.m. local time. The whole tournament will be streamed live on FloWrestling.org.
