Michael Willis of Colorado Springs, Colo. has been named as Communications Coordinator for USA Wrestling, the national governing body for wrestling in the United States.
Willis transferred to the Communications Department, after serving as a Fundraising Coordinator in USA Wrestling’s Development Department since October 2017.
Willis will be involved in a wide variety of Communications projects as part of USA Wrestling’s Communications team. In late May 2019, Willis will move to Philadelphia, Pa. and work remotely for USA Wrestling, providing the organization an opportunity to expand its communications reach and better serve the sport from a new location.
“We are extremely pleased that Michael Willis will join our Communications team at USA Wrestling. He has the skill set and experience to excel in his new role with the organization. Mike served with distinction in his previous position here, and has been a great team player on our national staff. His passion for wrestling and knowledge of the sport will serve him well with his new responsibilities,” said Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling’s Director of Communications and Special Projects.
Willis played an important role in the success of USA Wrestling’s Development Department, helping create a number of new programs and support other important projects. His work helped the organization increase the revenue generated through private donations and other fundraising efforts.
While in the Development Department, Willis received considerable communications experience, helping support the Communications Department at specific events and activities.
Willis is a 2017 graduate of Temple University, with a BA in Media Studies and Production, with a media analysis concentration. His minor in college was English. He was a wrestler in youth and high school programs, and remained very active in the sport as a journalist and fan during college and after.
Prior to joining USA Wrestling, Willis served as Communications Intern and grant-writer with Beat the Streets Philadelphia from May 2016 - June 2017. He also did freelance journalism work for Flowrestling and True-Wrestling.com while in college.
Willis also served as Communications Intern with Pennsylvania Regional Training Center from September 2016-June 2017, including a position on the Marketing Board of the PRTC.
Willis has begun his full-time communications duties, and will attend a number of events in the next few months across the nation.
