Five wrestlers repeat as USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals champions in Junior and 16U divisions

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Five wrestlers who returned as 2018 Folkstyle Nationals champions were able to repeat at this year’s USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals. Hunter Garvin of Iowa and Robert Paul Perez III of California were able to repeat as 16U champions. Kyle Haas of Kansas won last year in the 16U division and this year in the Junior division. Alex Facundo of Michigan and Ridge Lovett of Idaho repeated as Junior champions.

Facundo’s repeat victory didn’t come easy. The 2018 Cadet World bronze medalist had to take out nationally ranked Cael Valencia of California in the finals at 160 lbs. Facundo fended off Valencia’s many third-period takedown attempts to win 3-2.

At Junior 113 lbs., Drake Ayala of Iowa had a standout performance. Defeating his finals opponent 23-10, Ayala was two points shy of securing technical falls all the way through the tournament. Ayala outscored his opponents 82-24 with all 24 opponent points coming from escapes. 

The highly anticipated final at Junior 120 between three-time Missouri state champion Jeremiah Reno and two-time California state champion Maximo Renteria did not disappoint. Reno scored a takedown with 11 seconds left to send the match into overtime, where he scored again to win 9-7.

2015 USA Wrestling Triple Crown winner, Mosha Schwartz of Colorado, is seeking to repeat as Triple Crown winner again in 2019 after defeating three-time Oregon state champion Phillip Kue 13-3 in the finals. Schwartz scored bonus points in every match except his opening match with Iowa state champion Caleb Rathjen. 

In battles between two Division I commits, Iowa State commit Isaac Wilcox of Utah beat Oklahoma State commit Luke Surber of Oklahoma 4-1 in the Junior 152 lbs. finals and Minnesota commit Martin Wilkie of Montana beat Stanford commit Dawson Sihavong of California 8-5 in the Junior 145 lbs. finals.

TrackWrestling’s No. 3 high school heavyweight and No. 10 Class of 2020 wrestler Nash Hutmacher of South Dakota wrestled to expectations. He went 4-0 with three pins and a 13-0 major decision victory in route to his 285 lbs. title.

In 16U action, nationally ranked Jack Gioffre of California was pushed by Cisco Cabrera of California in the 106 lbs. finals but prevailed 8-7.

Super 32 champion Jesse Mendez of Indiana put on a show in the UNI-Dome. Before tech. falling his opponent in the finals, Mendez recorded three pins and one major decision victory at 132 lbs.

Andrew Wenzel of Illinois and Harley Andrew of Oklahoma put on one of the more exciting finals matches at 170 lbs. Trailing 5-0 halfway through the second period, Wenzel scored five points in the last two minutes and 30 seconds to send in the match into overtime and then scored the winning takedown with ten seconds left in overtime.
