NYKOBING FALSTER, Denmark - The first day of the Thor Masters Greco-Roman international tournament has been completed and 10 U.S. wrestlers have advanced to the second day of competition.

Three past U.S. World Team members are all unbeaten after day one: three-time World Team member Patrick Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) will be at 87 kg/191.5 lbs., two-time World Team member G’Angelo Hancock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) will be competing at 97 kg/213.5 lbs. and 2017 World Team member Pat Smith (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) will be at 77 kg/169.5 lbs.

Martinez opened with an 8-0 technical fall over American Tommy Brackett, then beat Eividas Stankevicius of Lithuania, 2-0. He opens Saturday’s action against Amer Hrustanovic of Austria.

Hancock had a nice first-round win, beating 2010 and 2013 World Military champion Oleksandr Shyshman of Ukraine, 5-0. He followed with a 9-0 techincal fall over Elias Kusmanen of Finland.

Smith was in control in both of his wins, beating Niko Erkkola of Finland, 4-0 and Leos Drmola of Slovakia, 9-2. His next opponent is Roland Schwarz of Germany.

The hosts are using the old two-pool, double-elimination international system, in which every athlete is guaranteed at least two matches. The medal matches are determined based upon the results from each pool.

Wrestling continues on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. local time, with the conclusion of the preliminary action. The bronze-medal bouts are set for 3:30 p.m., with the gold-medal matches at 4:30 p.m. Local time in Nykobing Falster is five hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone.
