USA wins men’s freestyle title and takes third in women’s freestyle at rugged Dan Kolov International this weekend

The United States had an impressive performance in both men’s and women’s freestyle at the Dan Kolov International in Ruse, Bulgaria this weekend, a UWW Ranking Tournament which attracted outstanding athletes from all across the world..


With 12 individual medalists, including four champions, the USA had a strong showing in both disciplines.


When the final standings came out, the USA won the team title in men’s freestyle and placed a strong third in the women’s freestyle standings. In the standings, UWW scored points only for the highest placement for each country at a weight class.


In men’s freestyle, the USA had 147 points, well ahead of runner-up Russia with 115 points and third place Turkey with 100 points. Rounding out the top five were No. 4 Ukraine and No. 5 Georgia.


The USA had three individual champions in men’s freestyle, with Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Nebraska WTC) at 74 kg/163 lbs., Alex Dieringer (Stillwater, Okla./TMWC/Cowboy RTC), at 79 kg/174 lbs. and Kyle Snyder ((Columbus, Ohio/TMWC/Ohio RTC) at 97 kg/213 lbs.


Getting a silver medal in men’s freestyle was Jordan Oliver (Ithaca, N.Y./Sunkist Kids/Finger Lakes RTC) at 65 kg/143 lbs. There were three bronze medalists in Bernard Futrell (Philadelphia, Pa./TMWC/Pennsylvania RTC) at 65 kg/143 lbs., James Green (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska WTC) at 70 kg/154 lbs. and Michael Macchiavello (Raleigh, N.C./Wolfpack RTC) at 92 kg/202.5 lbs.


The USA scored points in nine of the 10 weight classes. Also picking up points based upon their placement were Joe Colon (Fresno, Calif./TMWC/Valley RTC), who was fifth at 61 kg/134.5 lbs., Nick Gwiazdowski (Raleigh, N.C./TMWC/Wolfpack WC), who was seventh at 125 kg/275.5 lbs. and Nick Heflin (Norman, Okla. (Titan Mercury WC/Oklahoma RTC), who was ninth at 86 kg/189 lbs.


In women’s freestyle, China won the team title with 112 points, followed by runner-up Ukraine with 92 points and third-place United States with 77 points. The top five also included No. 4 Turkey and No. 5 India.


For the U.S. women, Tamrya Mensah-Stock (Colorado Springs, Colo./TMWC/OTC) won a gold at 68 kg/149.5 lbs. Claiming a silver medal was Erin Golston (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC/OTC) at 50 kg/110 lbs. Bronze medals went to Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 50 kg/110 lbs., Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC/OTC) at 53 kg/117 lbs. and Forrest Molinari (Iowa City, Iowa/TMWC/Hawkeye WC) at 65 kg/143 lbs.


Also scoring team points in women’s freestyle was Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky./Sunkist Kids), who was 10th at 62 kg/136 lbs.


As a UWW ranking tournament, athletes who placed in the top five of their weight class scored points in the UWW Ranking Series, which will determine the top four seeds at each weight class at the 2019 Worlds in Kazakhstan.


The USA had 16 athletes who scored Ranking Series points, with four gold medalists, two silver medalists, six bronze medalists and four athletes who placed fifth.
