RUSE, Bulgaria – Two U.S. wrestlers won semifinal bouts to qualify for the gold-medal matches on Sunday at the Dan Kolov International, a UWW Ranking Tournament.
Advancing to Sunday’s finals are 2016 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Kyle Snyder (Columbus, Ohio/TMWC/Ohio RTC) at 97 kg/213.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle and Erin Golston (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC/OTC) at 50 kg/110 lbs. in women’s freestyle
Snyder will battle 2012 Olympic silver medalist Valerii Andriitsev of Ukraine in the finals. Andriitsev was beaten in the finals of the 2012 London Games by U.S. star Jake Varner.
Snyder controlled all three of his wins. He opened with a 12-2 technical fall over 2017 U23 World medalist Ty Walz of the USA, then stopped Murazi Mchedlidze of Ukraine, 8-5. In the semifinals, he dominated Baki Sahin of Turkey in an 11-0 technical fall.
Golston edged U.S. rival Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids), 2-1 in her semifinal victory. Golston broke a 1-1 tie with a second-period step out to secure the close victory. She will battle past World medalist Iwona Matkowska of Poland in the gold-medal bout.
Golston had four wins on Saturday. She beat four-time World Team member Whitney Conder of the USA, 3-1, to start, then scored technical falls over Emilia Ciricu-Budeanu of Moldova and Nada Mohamed of Egypt.
Anthony advances to a bronze-medal match, against an opponent to be determined.
2018 World silver medalist Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC/OTC) was defeated in the semifinals at 53 kg/117 lbs., getting caught and pinned by Vinesh of India in the first period. Hildebrandt’s bronze-medal opponent is yet to be determined.
In the third group, six U.S. wrestlers will be in repechage with a chance to fight back to a medal match: Conder, Walz, plus Nick Heflin (Norman, Okla./Titan Mercury WC/Oklahoma RTC) at 86 kg/189 lbs., Nick Gwiazdowski (Raleigh, N.C./TMWC/Wolfpack WC) at 125 kg/275.5 lbs., Michael Kosoy (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids WC) at 125 kg/275.5 lbs. and Amy Fearnside (Colorado Springs, Colo./TMWC/OTC) at 53 kg/117 lbs.
The repechage for the second group of wrestlers was completed, and the USA advanced one more wrestler into the medal round. Bernard Futrell (Philadelphia, Pa./TMWC/Pennsylvania RTC) won two repechage bouts at 65 kg/143 lbs. to reach a bronze-medal match against Selahattin Kilicsallayan of Turkey.
Futrell started the day with an 8-0 win over Agustin Destribats of Argentina, then secured a 10-0 technical fall over
Evan Henderson of the USA.
The USA will have three athletes going for gold this evening: Jordan Oliver (Ithaca, N.Y./Sunkist Kids/Finger Lakes RTC) at 65 kg/143 lbs., Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Nebraska WTC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Tamyra Mensah-Stock (Colorado Springs, Colo./TMWC/OTC) at 68 kg/149.5 lbs.
