Cohlton Schultz (Parker, Colo./Sunkist Kids) has chosen to decline his best-of-three Special Wrestle-Off for the 2019 U23 World Championships.
As a 2019 Final X finalist, Schultz was eligible to request the Special Wrestle-off at 130 kg in Greco-Roman, based upon the 2019 UWW U23 Greco-Roman World Team Trials Procedures. On June 20, it was announced that Schultz had requested the Special Wrestle-off, after Schultz met the criteria and notified USA Wrestling that he would challenge for the spot.
Since then, Schultz has altered his training and competition plans and has notified USA Wrestling that he will not participate in the Special Wrestle-off.
That means that 2019 U23 World Team Trials champion David Tate Orndorff (Spokane, Wash./Utah Valley RTC) will compete for the United States at 130 kg at the U23 World Championships, set for Budapest, Hungary, October 28-November 3.
Orndorff is a Utah Valley University student-athlete who was a 2019 NCAA qualifier as a freshman. He placed third in the 2018 Senior Greco-Roman World Team Trials, which placed him on the Senior Greco-Roman National Team. Orndorff placed third in the 2018 U.S. Senior Open, placed third at the 2017 U23 World Team Trials and was a 2015 UWW Junior Nationals champion. He was a two-time Washington state high school champion for University High School.
Schultz has qualified to compete in Greco-Roman at the 2019 UWW Junior World Championships in Tallinn, Estonia, August 12-18. He begins his college career at Arizona State this fall.
There will be two other U23 Special Wrestle-offs, which were requested by other Final X finalists who met the proper criteria.
At 55 kg, Final X runner-up Brady Koontz will battle U23 World Team Trials champion Liam Cronin in Greco-Roman. Koontz competes for Ohio State, while Cronin attends the Univ. of Indiana
At 92 kg, Final X runner-up Bo Nickal will battle U23 World Team Trials champion Jakob Woodley in men’s freestyle. Nickal recently graduated from Penn State, while Woodley competes for the University of Oklahoma.
The site and date for the remaining U23 Special Wrestle-offs have not yet been finalized but are expected to be announced soon.
