Tulsa, Okla.- Last year, Team Illinois was the Women’s Freestyle Junior National Duals runner-up. This year, they stand on top of the podium after mounting a herculean comeback against an incredibly game Team Washington.
The Washington upper-weights kicked off the dual at a furious pace with a trio of pins. Starting at 164 pounds, Hana Richter took a 4-0 lead before cranking her opponent over for the fall. Tatum Heikkila followed it up at 180 pounds, hitting a headlock after a body lock attempt to earn the pin. At 200 pounds, Ofa He Lotu Tuifua was trailing 4-2 before reversing her opponent to her back for the fall.
After a double forfeit at 225 pounds, Isabella Morales of Washington earned a 6-2 decision at 100 pounds to extend Team Washington’s lead to 18-1.
Alexis Janiak provided the spark for Team Illinois to turn things around by picking up a fall at 106 pounds. Leading 6-0, Janiak hit a feet to back double leg takedown for the pin. Amiyah Hart kept the momentum rolling at 112 pounds for Team Illinois, earning a pin from neutral by taking her opponent to the mat in an upper body tie.

At 117 pounds, Elvie Villa earned a 10-0 technical fall, scoring eight points with a trap arm gut wrench. Taylin Long picked up another victory for Team Illinois, winning 5-0 at 122 pounds.
At 122 pounds and 127 pounds, Team Illinois picked up back-to-back come-from-behind pins. Asia Nguyen-Smith was trailing 6-0 before taking her opponent to her back for the fall. Randi Robison followed with a headlock for the pin while trailing 5-0.
Illinois took the next two matches as well, with Louisa Schwab controlling an 8-0 decision at 138 pounds and Sydney Manos earning an 8-2 victory at 144 pounds. Kiley Hubby took the last match of the afternoon for Team Washington at 152 pounds, winning 6-0.
Illinois becomes only the fifth team to have won the Women’s National Duals in its history, with California winning seven times, Texas three times, Washington twice and New York once.
Last year, Texas 1 beat Illinois in the finals, 47-20.
