Minnesota Blue finishes strong to beat returning champ Illinois, 40-33 to win 16U Greco-Roman National Duals

SPOKANE, Wash. - Led by powerful lightweights, and some clutch performances at the end of the dual meet, Minnesota Blue defeated defending champion Illinois, 40-33 to claim the Greco-Roman team title at the U15 National Duals on Thursday.
The drive to victory included Minnesota winning six of the last eight matches, including four by technical fall
The dual meet started at 138 pounds, and after the heavyweight match, Illinois led 22-16. The lightweights came out for Minnesota, and won four straight matches, including three technical falls, to give the Minnesota Blue a lead it would never relinquish.
The run started 88 pounds, as Alan Koehler needed just 53 seconds to score a 10-0 technical fall over Benjamin Dunne. Included in his assault was a four-point headlock, another takedown and two gut wrenches.
Caleb Thoennes responded at 94 pounds with a wild 19-8 technical fall over Dominic Shiavone. The opening scramble of the match ended up with Thoennes leading 7-6, in an exchange where both athletes had big scores. Thoennes took command with a powerful gut wrench to lead 15-8 at the break. A four-point throw in the second period sealed the tech for Thoennes.
Jore Volk won a tight 4-3 match at 100, coming from behind to win the bout over Kannon Webster. It was Webster up 3-0 at the break, but Volk scored a takedown and gut wrench in the second period to win the bout.
The run was capped off with a 10-0 technical fall from Mason Gehloff at 106 pounds over Joseph Fernau. Gehloff hit a four-point headlock in both the first period and second period and ended the match with a gut wrench. At that time, Minnesota led 31-24, with just four matches left.
Illinois responded with two more wins, as Abraham Hinrichsen scored a 6-2 decision over Brendan Howes at 113 pounds, and Joey Cape opened up his offense for an 11-1 technical fall over Maxwell Peterson.
Hinrichsen broke a 2-2 tie in the second period with a takedown and gut wrench to win his match. Cape hit a four-point throw in the first period, and won the match on a two-point arm spin takedown. Illinois had closed Minnesota’s lead to 33-31 going into the final two bouts.
This is where the clutch wrestling won the day for Minnesota. At 126, Derrick Cardinal jumped to a 6-0 lead thanks to a four-point headlock and two stepouts, and closed it with a second period takedown for a 6-2 win over Blake McGee.
Minnesota led by four points going into the final bout at 132. Chase DeBlaere fell behind 4-0 to Jack Milos of Illinois, but quickly came back with his own four-point hip toss and some turns for a 10-4 lead at the break. He hit two more four-pointers in the second, a headlock and a hip toss to beat Milos, 18-8 and seal the Minnesota win.
The early part of the meet was a see-saw affair, in which Illinois took a lead, but Minnesota was competitive along the way.
Minnesota opened with a win at 138 pounds, as Cael Berg edged Kole Brower, 4-3. Berg scored his four points in the first period with a takedown and gutwrench.
Illinois answered with a 9-1 victory by Dean Hamiti at 145 pounds over Landon Johnson. Leading 3-0 at the break, Hamiti nailed a four-point body lock then added another two-point throw to put the match away.
The first bonus points came at 153, as Minnesota’s Hunter Lydon scored a 12-1 technical fall over Robert Major. Lyden jumped to 5-0 at the break on an arm spin to a gut wrench. In the second period, he kept adding points, one or two at a time, until a caution and two penalty against Major ended the bout in the closing seconds.
Illinois quickly answered with technical fall win of its own, as Caden Ernd stopped Ryder Rogotzke, 10-0 at 160. Ernd opened with a four-point throw and added two scores to lead 8-0 at the break. A takedown early in the second period closed out the victory.
Illinois continued its progress at 170, as Andrew Wenzel edged Anthony Tuttle, 3-1. Tied at 1-1 in the second period, Wenzel went ahead on a passivity penalty against Tuttle, then forced a stepout to secure his two point victory.
Minnesota secured the first pin of the day, as Cayden Homme locked up and threw Mario Torme for a second-period fall at 182. Homme was leading 9-2 when he launched Torme and put him away.
Illinois came back with wins in the three highest weight classes to take its biggest lead.
At 195, Tom Culp secured a 10-0 first-period technical fall over Max Balow, with a takedown, two gut wrenches and a four-point throw on the edge. Michael Roath kept it going for Illinois at 220, hitting a key four-point hip toss in the second period to beat Justin Matson, 6-1. With just eight seconds on the clock, Hayden Copass of Illinois broke a 2-2 tie by getting behind Gavin Layton and taking him down for a 4-2 win at 285.
Then the Minnesota lightweights took over and helped lead the team to victory.
The U16 Freestyle National Duals begin on Friday, with the pool competitions. The event concludes with the medal round finals on Saturday.
