SPOKANE, Wash. – The first day of Greco-Roman at the 16U National Duals featured the pool competitions, where teams were split into four different pools and competed in a bracket format.
Defending 16U National Dual Greco-Roman champion Illinois was one of the four teams to win their pool, and advance to the Gold-Silver Pool on Thursday, which will determine the top eight teams in the tournament.
Illinois claimed a 66-10 victory in the Pool B semifinals, then controlled California 49-24 in the Pool B finals.
The other teams which won their pool were Minnesota Blue in Pool A, Pennsylvania in Pool C and Georgia in Pool D.
Minnesota Blue hammered Iowa, 61-11 in the Pool A finals. Pennsylvania edged Washington Red, 39-34 in the Pool C finals, while Georgia controlled Missouri 55-17.
The top two teams in each pool also advance to the eight-team Gold-Silver pool. The runners-up in the pool competition included Iowa (Pool A), California (Pool B), Washington Red (Pool C) and Missouri (Pool D).
There was a true second-place match in Pool B, where California held off third-place Oklahoma, 47-28. These teams had not met in their bracket prior to this wrestle-off. California jumped to an early lead by winning the first three matches, and did not let Oklahoma back into the match. California won 11 of the 17 matches contested.
The tournament starts again on Thursday, with sessiona at 8:00 a.m. PT and 1:00 p.m. PT. The placement pools will be completed, setting up medal matches in each of the pools. The results from the Gold-Silver pool will determine the champion and top eight teams. There will also be a Bronze-Copper Pool, a Yellow Pool, Green Pool and Red Pool.
The event is being broadcast live by TrackWrestling. All three of USA Wrestling’s major National Dual meet events (16U, 14U, Junior) will be live on TrackWrestling.
