Shilson ties record with sixth Fargo title; Mota-Pettis and Holloway also repeat as Junior Women’s National champs

FARGO, N.D. – Emily Shilson of Minnesota has earned the right to be considered one of the greatest high school women wrestlers in American history. Shilson completed her prep-level career on a high note, claiming her sixth career national title in Fargo with dominance on Wednesday.
Shilson, a graduated senior, came in as a five-time Fargo champion, with three Junior and two 16U titles under her belt. In her final appearance on the raised mat in the Fargodome, Shilson scored a first-period 10-0 technical fall over 2019 16U Nationals champion Faith Cole of Missouri for her fourth Junior Nationals stop sign trophy.
The match ended after two sequences. Shilson scored the first takedown and two turns to go up 6-0. She got one more takedown and added an ankle lace to make it 10-0 in 1:08.
Shilson had six technical falls, with the finals bout against Cole being the only one to go longer than one minute. She was named Outstanding Wrestler for her strong tournament and historic career.
She has matched the record set by the great Teshya Alo of Hawaii, who also had four Junior and two 16U golds. Six is the maximum number of titles available for women, with two years in the 16U division and four years in their Junior (high school) division.
Shilson has also won a UWW Cadet World title, and last summer became the first U.S. wrestler to win a Youth Olympic Games gold medal. She will be attending Augsburg University in the fall.
Shilson was one of three 2018 Junior National champions to repeat, Xochitl Mota-Pettis of Texas at 127 pounds and Gabrielle Holloway of Texas at 225 pounds.
Mota-Pettis was in command the entire match against Lana Perez of Hawaii. Leading 8-1 at the break, Mota-Pettis scored a takedown, then nailed a four-point hip toss to win by technical fall, 14-1.
Holloway was down after one period to Isabeau Shalack of Illinois, 1-0 on a shot clock violation. In the second period, Holloway blocked a throw attempt and secured the pin in 3:37.
Three past Cadet World medalists in the finals won Junior titles, Shilson, plus Tiare Ikei of Hawaii at 117 and Alara Boyd of Indiana at 138.
Ikei, the 2019 U.S. Senior Open champion, trailed 4-0 early to 2019 U16 Nationals champion Jennifer Soto of California, but quickly got her offense going, and ended up pinning Soto in the first period.
Boyd was dominant from the opening whistle against Morgan Norris of Nevada. Leading 10-1, Boyd locked up a cradle and pinned Norris in 1:32.
Two talented young women won double titles, by claiming both 16U Nationals and Junior Nationals the same year. Sage Mortimer of Utah at 100 pounds and Kennedy Blades of Illinois at 164 pounds.
Mortimer nailed an early headlock, and pinned Rayana Sahagun of Michigan in just 34 seconds. In a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2, top-ranked Blades scored five first-period takedowns to score a 10-0 first period technical fall over No. 2 Tristan Kelly of Colorado.
It was a historic performance for Team Washington, which won its first Junior Nationals team title with 65 points, ahead of returning champion California, which had 53 points. Washington had one champion, but a total of 14 All-Americans. They are only the third state to win a Junior Women’s team title, joining California and Texas with that honor.
In the All-Washington finals battle at 132 pounds, Kaylee Moore defeated Viktorya Torres, 8-4. Moore took the lead in the first, and scored clutch points throughout the battle to maintain her edge. They competed in different weights at the Washington state meet this year, with Moore winning the title at 130, and Torres placing second at 135.
Hawaii had the most finalists with four, and ended up with two champions, Ikei and Kelani Corbett at 180 pounds, Corbett scored three first period takedowns and one second period takedown to beat No. 1 ranked Elisa Robinson of Kansas, 8-0.
Pennsylvania also had two individual champions, with Montana Delawder at 112 pounds and Tiffani Baublitz at 152 pounds. Delawder was dominant on her feet and stopped Josie Bartishofski of Wisconsin, 9-3, while Baublitz edged Kiley Hubby of Washington, 4-2.
It was a good day for the new women’s wrestling program at Augsburg, as three of their incoming recruits won Junior National titles, Shilson, Moore and Gabrielle Skidmore of Wisconsin at 122 points. Skidmore took the lead and went on to defeat Nanea Estrella of Hawaii, 5-2.
Other champions were McKenzie Cook of Alaska at 144 pounds and Gabrielle Hamilton of Illinois at 200 pounds. Cook had a strong start, and held off a late charge from Colorado’s Jerzie Estrada to win 8-7. Hamilton was thrown to her back early on a headlock, but recovered to launch a lateral drop to pin Angela Buenrrostro of California in 1:33.
The women’s competitions are done, and the USMC Junior/16U Nationals wrap up over the next two days with the 16U and Junior Greco-Roman Nationals. All the action is on FloWrestling.
