FARGO, N.D. - We’re getting down to the final days in Fargo and only Greco-Roman competition remains. Today 16U made it through the quarterfinals.
To the surprise of few, Illinois is in the lead after day one with eight in the semifinals.
Seven freestyle champions are into the semifinals and still eligible to be double champions. Cael Hughes at 94 lbs., Jore Volk at 100 lbs., John Wiley at 138 lbs., Leonard Pinto at 170 lbs., Seth Shamute at 195 lbs., Kolby Franklin at 220 lbs., and Hayden Copass at 285 lbs.
Of those wrestlers, only Hayden Copass is also a Folkstyle Nationals champion and still eligible for the USA Wrestling Triple Crown Award.
170 lbs. is probably the most interesting weight. In a rematch of a freestyle semifinal, Leonard Pinto of Pennsylvania will take on Tate Picklo of Oklahoma at 170 lbs. Pinto won the freestyle match 10-0, but Picklo will be this year’s Cadet World Team member. On the bottom side of 170, freestyle champion Thomas Stewart of Maryland bumped up from 160 lbs., but was pinned by U15 Nationals champion Gavin Nelson of Minnesota.
2019 Cadet World Team member Robert Paul Perez III of California is making his way through the 145 lbs. bracket. Perez is 4-0 and has outscored his opponents 41-0.
At 120 lbs., AJ Smith of Minnesota took out 2018 World Team member Cale Anderson of Wisconsin 15-9 in the Rd. of 32. In the quarters, Smith then fell to Nicolar Rivera of Wisconsin. This sets up a fun semifinal with returning finalist Joey Cape of Illinois. On the bottom side, Hunter Garvin of Iowa took out 2019 U15 World gold medalist Brennan Van Hoecke of Florida 11-0
2019 U15 World gold medalist Brock Bobzien of California beat returning champ Kenndyl Mobley of Illinois 5-3 at 113 lbs., setting up a semifinal with freestyle runner-up and 2018 UWW Cadet National Greco-Roman runner-up Gabe Whisenhunt of Oregon.
At 100 lbs., Trason Oehme of South Dakota pulled off an upset of his own returning finalist Kai Owen of Florida
Hayden Copass of Illionis had his closest match both the freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions in the quarterfinals today against Ethan Kremer of Kansas. The Illinois heavyweight won 7-2. It was his first match he did not win by technical fall or pin.
Wrestling gets back underway tomorrow at 9 a.m. CST. All matches, results, and live streaming can be found on FloWrestling.com.
