Fargo Day 2 preview (7/14): 16U Women’s finals, 16U Men wrestle semifinals and Junior Men open action

Day two of the USMC Junior/16U Nationals has three different tournaments all going on at once, all in the same style- freestyle. We see two men’s divisions (16U and Junior) and a women’s division (16U).
There are so many past Fargo champions and All-Americans on the 25 mats that it is difficult to keep track of them all.
WHAT FINISHES: 16U Women freestyle champions and All-Americans are determined
Sunday marks the finals of the 16U Women’s Freestyle tournament, which will award the first national champion stop sign trophies of the 2019 Fargo experience. The women competed through the semifinal round on Saturday, and not only have the finalists have been set, but all of the medal matches are determined.

WHAT CONTINUES: 16U Men’s Freestyle powers through the semifinals and consolation semifinals
The bulk of the 16U Men’s Freestyle Nationals is held on Sunday, as both the finalist pairings and the All-American wrestlers will be determined. At this point, the top four states in terms of athletes who remain on the championship side of the bracket are Ohio (13), Minnesota and Pennsylvania (12) and Wisconsin (9). Four returning champions are still on the winner’s side of the bracket: Jordan Williams of Oklahoma (120). Nicolar Rivera of Wisconsin (120), Tate Picklo of Oklahoma (172) and Hayden Copass of Illinois (285).
WHAT STARTS: Junior Men’s Freestyle gets rolling with preliminary action
The Junior men’s freestyle event is getting started on Sunday, with a preliminary entry of 1,295 athletes, potentially the largest field of the six tournaments here in Fargo. Two 2018 Junior National champions return, as do four 2018 Junior National runners-up. Add up the 2017 and 2018 16U Nationals champions in the field, and you add 12 more Fargo freestyle champions to the mix.
JUNIOR FREESTYLE NOTES:
There are two 2018 Junior National freestyle champions who return this year, Keegan O’Toole of Wisconsin (152) and Luke Luffman of Illinois (285). Both are up in weight from last year, when O’Toole was at 138 and Luffman was at 220.
Four 2018 Junior National freestyle runners-up are back again, Ronan Schuelke of Illinois (113), Ridge Lovett of Idaho (138), Dustin Plott of Oklahoma (182) and Nash Hutmacher of South Dakota (285). Hutmacher, a Nebraska football recruit, remains at heavyweight. Schuelke is up from 113, Lovett is up from 132 and Plott is up from 170.
Lovett was one of four 2018 Junior Greco-Roman champions in this year’s freestyle field, along with Eli Griffin of Oklahoma (106), Cael Carlson of Minnesota (152) and Alex Cramer of Illinois (170).
Six 2018 16U National champions are stepping up to the Junior Nationals in freestyle this year: Jakason Burks of Nebraska (120), Dominick Serrano of Colorado (132), Joshua Edmond of Michigan (138), Quayin Short of Minnesota (170), Luke Stout of Pennsylvania (182) and Rocky Elam of Missouri (182). Elam returns to the same weight class as last year, but all the others have moved up. Burks was at 113, Serrano was at 126, Edmond was at 132, Short was at 160 and Stout was at 170.
Go back two years, and of the 2017 Cadet National champions, six of them are competing in the Junior freestyle this year. Hutmacher is one of those (seeking Fargo gold for third straight year), and add in Drake Ayala of Iowa (113), Jett Strickenberger of Colorado (113), Joshua Saunders of Missouri (138), Fidel Mayora of Illinois (152), Devin Winston of Missouri (182) and Braxton Amos of West Virginia (220).
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE JUNIOR FREESTYLE TEAM RACE
Last year, Illinois was the Junior Nationals team champion in freestyle. Placing behind Illinois in freestyle were Ohio, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. However, at the 2019 Junior National Duals, held this June in Tulsa, Okla., Oklahoma won the freestyle team championship, stopping Illinois in the finals, followed by Ohio, Iowa and California.
