Several wrestlers from the United States will be taking the mat this weekend at the Grand Prix of France/Henri Deglane Challenge held in Nice, France, Feb. 1-3
The Hawkeye Wrestling Club, based in Iowa City, Iowa, is sending four wrestlers, including three in men’s freestyle and one women’s freestyle wrestler.
Cory Clark of the Titan Mercury WC and Sammy Brooks of the New York AC will have a short turn around since competing at the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix, just last weekend in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.
Clark, a four-time All-American and NCAA champion for the Hawks, fell short of the medals at the Yarygin. He boasts a silver medal at the 2018 Grand Prix of Spain and a bronze medal at the 2018 Ziolkowski Memorial in Poland.
Brooks is coming off of a 1-1 finish at the Ivan Yarygin. The Oak Park, Illinois native will be competing at 86 kg. Brooks has made three U.S. age-group World Teams, as a Cadet, Junior and U23 competitor. Brooks also won a silver medal at the 2018 Ziolkowski Memorial.
Clark and Brooks won’t be the only HWC wrestlers on a quick turnaround. Former Hawkeye Brandon Sorenson of the Titan Mercury WC will be competing this weekend as well after wrestling at the Dave Schultz Memorial last weekend. The four-time All-American for the Hawkeyes went 3-1 at the Dave Schultz Memorial, losing to 2016 Olympian Frank Molinaro 3-1 in the 70 kg final to place second. He was also a 2018 Canada Cup champion.
Competing for the HWC in women’s freestyle at 57 kg will be Michaela Beck of the New York AC. The New York native was runner-up in both the 2018 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament and U.S. Senior Open. This will be her first international competition in 2019. She was a Pan American Senior bronze medalist in 2018, as well as a 2018 Pan American Junior silver medalist.
The Wolfpack RTC in Raleigh, N.C. will also be well represented in Nice.
Former NC State wrestler and two-time All-American for the Wolfpack Tommy Gantt of the Titan Mercury WC will be competing at 74 kg. Gantt was the champion at the 2018 Bill Farrell Memorial International.
At 92 kg for the Wolfpack RTC will be 2018 NCAA champion Michael Macchiavello. The Monroe, N.C. native is starting his Senior-level international freestyle career this season.
Joining his teammate at 92 kg in France will be Timmy McCall of the Titan Mercury WC. McCall will be looking to repeat his success in 2017 when he won the Henri Deglane Challenge at 86 kg. McCall boasts silver medals at the 2016 Bill Farrell Memorial and the 2017 Dave Schultz Memorial.
The women’s freestyle event will be held Friday, with men’s freestyle contested on Saturday. The Greco-Roman competition is scheduled for Sunday, but there are no U.S. entries. Nice is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone.
This is the 45th year that the Henri Deglane Challenge has been hosted. This season, it is also being recognized as the Grand Prix of France.
