COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Jacarra Winchester was fifth in the 2018 World Championships at 55 kg. She entered the 2019 Dave Schultz Memorial up two weight classes at 59 kg.
It was no problem at all. Winchester, who competes for the Titan Merrcury WC, won all three matches in her round robin in dominant fashion, scoring two technical falls and a pin. In her last match on Thursday night, Winchester hit some big four-point moves on the way to a 12-0 technical fall over Lauren Louive of the New York AC.
The champion at 65 kg, after much discussion and a final decision by the UWW representative at the tournament, was 2017 Junior World champion Maya Nelson of the Sunkist Kids.
In the first match of the tournament, 2018 World bronze medalist Mallory Velte dropped a 2-1 decision to 2016 U.S. Open champion, Amanda Hendey 2-1 at 65 kg. Velte was quickly called up for her second match, which she lost to 2017 Junior World champion Maya Nelson, 8-1. Her team challenged the result, and it was determined that Velte did not have the required 20 minute rest time. Tournament officials scheduled a Velte-Nelson ematch in the second session.
This evening, Nelson had a 3-0 record in her other matches, but chose not to wrestle Velte again and forfeited. Based on that result, Velte got the gold, Nelson the silver and Brazil’s Lais Nunez the bronze. The procedure that led to the scheduled re-wrestled match was challenged, and ultimately the UWW decision was that the original 8-1 win by Nelson would stand.
The medals after this final decision were Nelson with gold, Nunes with silver and Velte with bronze. Nelson finished with a perfect 4-0 record when it was all sorted out.
At 55 kg, the round-robin finals bout was not held, as Junior World team and Cadet World team member Alisha Howk of the Sunkist Kids received an injury default win over two-time U23 World Team member Dominique Parrish of the Sunkist Kids. Both entered the final round with 1-0 records. Parrish got the silver.
In the morning session, the 57 kg weight classs was completed, as Ariana Villaescusa of Army WCAP defeated Amanda Walker of Wyoming Seminary in two straight matches in a best-of-three series. Villaescusa pinnedWalker in bout one in 2:19 and secured a pin in bout two in 4:41. It was her first tournament since the November 2017 Dave Schultz Memorial, when she was injured and required neck surgery.
Two of the deciding women’s matches in the final round were all-Canadian battles.
At 50 kg, 2012 World champion and three-time World medalist Jessica MacDonald defeated Natasha Kramble by technical fall, 10-0. In the deciding bout at 53 kg, Samantha Stewart won by injury default when Jade Parsons could not continue midway through the first period.
For MacDonald, it was a third career Dave Schultz Memorial International victory, to go along with titles in 2011 and 2014.
The other individual women’s champion was Canada’s 2018 World Team member Jessica Brouillette, who scored a 10-0 technical fall win in the 62 kg finals over three-time U.S. age-group World Team member Alexandria Liles, who wrestled unattached.
The rest of the women’s tournament will be completed on Friday, with 68 kg, 72 kg and 76 kg contested, along with some Greco-Roman and men’s freestyle weight classes.
The entire tournament is being broadcast live by FloWrestling.
