HAMPTON, Va. – Coming into the Virginia Duals, No. 13 Virginia Tech came in with the highest ranking of the eight teams in the National College Division.
After its 37-5 domination of cross-state rival Virginia in the finals, it left no doubt as to the best team in the field this year.
Coming into the event unranked, Virginia had a great weekend going. The Cavaliers knocked off No. 20 Lock Haven in the quarterfinals, 32-12 on Friday, then put away No. 16 Arizona State, 23-16 in Saturday’s semifinals.
The finals dual started out well for Virginia, as Jack Mueller scored a technical fall over Tech’s Kyle Norstrem, 21-6 at 125 pounds. The Cavaliers led 5-0 after one match.
The Hokies took over from there, winning the next nine matches to smash the Cavaliers, 37-5. Included in the nine-match run were five bonus point wins. Earning pins were Mitch Moore (141) and BC LaPrade (157). David McFadden added a technical fall at 174 and Zack Zavatsky won by major decision at 184 pounds.
It was a tough day for the team which travelled the farthest, No. 16 Arizona State, which was defeated in the third place match by Oklahoma, 21-19. Down by 11 points going into the last three matches, Sooner Kayne MacCallum pinned Jacen Peterson in 5:19 at 184 pounds to jumpstart the comeback. Winning by decision in the final two matches were Jake Woodley (197) and Jacob Boyd (285), giving Lou Rosselli’s team an inspiring win.
Old Dominion stopped Chattanooga, 21-15 to place fifth, while No. 20 Lock Haven took seventh with a 26-15 win over Kent State.
