Four U.S. wrestlers reach semifinals on day one of Dan Kolov International in Bulgaria

RUSE, Bulgaria – Four U.S. wrestlers have reached the semifinal round on the first day of the Dan Kolov International, the second UWW Ranking Tournament for men’s and women’s wrestling.
There are three U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers in the semifinals: 2018 World bronze medalist Joe Colon (Fresno, Calif./TMWC/Valley RTC) at 61 kg/134.5 lbs., plus Alex Dieringer (Stillwater, Okla./TMWC/Cowboy RTC) at 79 kg/174 lbs. and Michael Macchiavello (Raleigh, N.C./Wolfpack RTC) at 92 kg/202.5 lbs.
Colon won a pair of bouts to qualify for the semifinals against 2018 World silver medalist Nurislam Sanayev of Kazakhstan.
Dieringer dominated two opponents with technical falls, and will draw 2018 U23 World champion Nika Kentchadze of Georgia.
Macchiavello won his only match of the session, stopping Istvan Vereb of Hungary, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. He will battle 2019 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix champion Magomed Kurbanov of Russia in the semifinals.
Reaching the semifinals in the women’s freestyle competition is 2017 Junior World champion Maya Nelson (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids/OTC) at 65 kg/143 lbs. Nelson won a pair of technical falls in the morning session and will face 2010 World bronze medalist Henna Johansson of Sweden in the semifinals.
The semifinals are set for 5 p.m. local time, which is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone. The tournament is broadcast live on FloWrestling.
