GYOR, Hungary – The United States had seven athletes, including six past Senior World Team members, in competition on Sunday at the Grand Prix of Hungary, the second UWW Ranking Tournament in Greco-Roman.
Three U.S. wrestlers reached the quarterfinals where they were defeated: Dalton Roberts (Marquette, Mich./NYAC) at 60 kg/132 lbs., RaVaughn Perkins (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 77 kg/169.5 lbs. and Robby Smith (Evanston, Ill./NYAC/Chicago RTC) at 130 kg/286 lbs.
Roberts had a strong 6-1 decision over Helary Maegisalu of Estonia to start his day. He was defeated in a bizarre quarterfinals bout by Di Hu of China, 10-4. Hu scored on a headlock and then Roberts blocked an armthrow with a slick counter headlock of his own, pinning Hu. The Chinese corner challenged, and the review wiped away Roberts’ pin. Quickly, Hu hit a body lock and a turn to take a commanding 10-4 lead, and Roberts was unable to score again.
Perkins opened with a pair of victories, stopping Ilie Cojocari of Romania, 3-1, then defeating American Pat Smith, 8-0. In the quarterfinals, Perkins dropped a competitive 4-1 match to past Olympic and World champion Hyeong-Woo Kim of Korea.
Smith also opened with a nice win, stopping Asian Games champion Muninjon Abduallaev of Uzbekistan, 1-1 by criteria. In his quarterfinal against Marko Koscevic of Croatia, Smith was put down for passivity and was turned on a gut wrench. A Koscevic arm throw added four points to expand the lead, and Smith went on to fall 7-1.
All three of the U.S. quarterfinalists were eliminated when the wrestlers who defeated them went on to lose in the semifinals, and the Americans could not advance to repechage.
Smith was a 2016 Olympian and four-time World Team member. Perkins and Roberts competed at the 2018 World Championships for the USA.
Going 1-1 on the day and also not eligible for repechage was 2017 Junior World champion Kamal Bey (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids at 77 kg/169.5 lbs. Three U.S. athletes were defeated in their first match. None of the U.S. athletes on Sunday qualified for repechage.
The U.S. completed the tournament with one individual champion, G’Angelo Hancock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), who claimed a gold-medal at 97 kg/213 lbs. on Saturday. Placing fifth on Saturday at 63 kg/138.75 lbs was Travis Rice (Washington, Ill./Illinois RTC/NYAC).
