GYOR, Hungary – With a gutty performance, two-time Senior World Team member G’Angelo Hancock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) claimed a gold-medal at 97 kg/2013 lbs. at the Grand Prix of Hungary, the second UWW Ranking Tournament.
Hancock scored a come-from-behind 3-3 criteria decision over two-time University World champion Fatih Baskoy of Turkey in the finals.
Hancock led 1-0 at the break. In the second period, Hancock was hit for passivity and penalized a point, and placed down. Baskoy hit a lift which no points were awarded, but a challenge resulted in the Turkish wrestler getting two points for a 3-1 lead. With time running out, Hancock got behind Baskoy for a takedown, to tie it at 3-3. He held strong in the closing seconds to secure the criteria win.
He wrestled tough all day. He opened the tournament with an 8-0 technical fall over Seyeol Lee of Korea, then stopped Abudourexiti Alimujiang of China, 4-0 in the quarterfinals. A two-point reversal on a gutwrench was the difference in Hancock’s 3-2 semifinal win over Hassan Ali Aryanezhad of Iran, 3-2.
Hancock, known by his friends as Tracy, received 18 UWW Ranking Series points, eight points as a champion plus 10 points for having more than 20 entries. He entered ranked at No. 13, and will surely move up after his win.
Outside of the World Championships, these ranking events are the toughest in the world, with eight returning medalists competing. I was very pleased with the way Tracy performed today. I love the outcome, the way he competed and the way he carried himself throughout the event. Tracy represented himself, the U.S. Greco program and his country with class,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland.
“Tracy did a great job sticking to his game plan. He was patient and violent at the same time and that’s a tough dichotomy to balance,” said Lindland.
At 63 kg/139 lbs., Travis Rice (Washington, Ill./Illinois RTC/NYAC) placed fifth after dropping a bronze-medal match against 2018 World bronze medalist Salike Walihan of China, 9-0.
Rice opened with an injury default win over Tamas Nad of Serbia. In the semifinals, he fell to Erbatu Tuo of China, 9-0.
Coming into this event, Rice was No. 16 in the UWW Ranking Series standings. Rice gets eight more points, two points for placing fifth and six points for having fewer than 10 entries.
