FLASH: Whitford and Sorensen win golds, as 16 U.S. athletes claim medals at Cerro Pelado in Cuba

A group of U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers, representing a variety of clubs and RTCs, are bringing home a haul of medals from the Cerro Pelado International in Havana, Cuba.
Earning gold medals were Ben Whitford (Saint Johns, Mich./TMWC) at 61 kg/134 lbs. and Brandon Sorensen (Iowa City, Iowa/TMWC/Hawkeye WC) at 70 kg/154 lbs.
Sorensen won his second gold medal of the winter tour season, after also claiming gold at the Dave Schultz Memorial International in January. He defeated another U.S. athlete, Lavion Mayes, in the championship match.
Whitford won a round robin competition at his weight class. It is his second international placement since returning to competition after a long time away from the sport. He also won a bronze medal at the Dave Schultz Memorial.
According to reports, the USA secured five silver medals and nine bronze medals.
