by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The first day of the King and Queen of the Mountain tournament wrapped up with dual action on Friday at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
In boys’ dual action, BearCave of Colorado dominated in pool competition, going 4-0 and outscoring its opponents 252-63 to move onto the placement bracket. In the pool bracket, BearCave defeated Team Idaho, Betterman Elite, Chatfield and Nebraska Titans.
In the placement bracket, BearCave faced Duran-Mesa in the semifinals. Duran-Mesa won the first four matches, but BearCave stormed back for a 37-34 win to advance to the finals.
In the gold-medal match, BearCave, coached by Ben VomBaur, faced off against Team Idaho, coached by Chris Owens, for the second time of the day. The coaches had an interesting connection as Owens was VomBaur’s college coach at Boise State.
BearCave won eight matches to seven for a 34-31 win to take home the crown for the second-straight year.
In the girls’ tournament, it was an eight-team round-robin, allowing every team to compete against every team.
The Black Mambas, a team comprised of all-stars from all over the country, cleaned up the competition, winning all seven of its duals and outscoring the other teams, 357-30.
Taking second-place was Colorado All-Stars Blue, which finished the day 6-1.
The Black Mambas and Colorado All-Stars Blue went head-to-head in the first round, where the Black Mambas won 52-3.
The King and Queen of the Mountain continues Saturday with the individual tournaments. Keep up-to-date with everything on Trackwrestling.com.
