TBILISI, Georgia - The New York City Regional Training Center brought two athletes to the Tbilisi Grand Prix and it will be going home with two fifth place finishes.

At 61 kg, Shelton Mack (Manhattan, N.Y./TMWC/NYCRTC) 1-1 yesterday to make the bronze medal match. Mack dropped this match to Berdznishivili of Georgia on criteria 3-3 today. Up, 2-0 at the break, the Georgian was able to hold onto the lead in the second period. Mack scored his points on from two stepout points and a shot clock point.

At 70 kg, Evan Henderson (New York, N.Y./TMWC/NYCRTC), was pulled back into repechage today and went 1-1 to finish in fifth place as well. In his repechage bout, Henderson pinned R. Malakoevi of Georgia to make the bronze medal match. In the bronze medal match, Henderson fought hard, but a four-point throw in the first period proved to be the difference maker for M. Skhulukhia of Georgia. The Georgian was then up 6-0 and went mostly on the defense, but was able to counter enough of Henderson’s shots to make the final score 9-7.

Two Marine wrestlers, Vaughn Monreal-Berner at 87 kg and Jamel Johnson at 67 kg, also wrestled today. While neither of them is still on the front side, it is unclear at this time whether or not they have been pulled back into repechage for tomorrow.

Monreal-Berner dropped his first match to S. Khachidze of Georgia 10-4.

Of note form today’s action, former Boston University wrestler and current Columbia University assistant wrestling coach, Nestor Taffur beat 2012 Olympic champion and 2016 Olympic silver medalist Toghrul Asgarov of Azerbaijan at 74 kg. Taffur was up 11-4 before Asgarov injury defaulted. Taffur was born in New Jersey and trains at the NYRTC, but currently competes for Columbia. He will wrestle tomorrow for bronze.

Wrestling will continue on tomorrow with Marine wrestlers Terrence Zaleski and Daniel Miller starting their tournament.
