There are two ways to describe the 2019 U.S. Junior World Team in women’s freestyle that will compete at the UWW Junior World Championships in Tallinn, Estonia next week.
Experienced. Talented.
Consider this.
• Five of the team members, which is half of the team, have won a total of nine age-group World medals for Team USA
• Nine of the 10 team members have competed in a past age-group World Championships
• The one who has not been to a World Championships has won Pan American medals and Senior international events
• Three of the team members are on the current Senior Women’s National Team, and three others were on last year’s Senior Women’s National Team. One made the last two Senior Women’s National Teams.
Leading the team effort is 2018 Cadet World champion and three-time age-group World medalist Macey Kilty (Stratford, Wis./Sunkist Kids) at 65 kg/143 lbs. Kilty was also a 2018 Junior World silver medalist and a 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist. Kilty is a member of the Senior Women’s National Team, at No. 3 on the ladder. She is currently an Elite Accelerator Program (EAP) athlete at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. She has won numerous USA Wrestling age-group national titles during her career.
Two-time age-group World medalist on the roster are Alleida Martinez (Selma, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 50 kg/110 lbs. and Alara Boyd (Yorktown, Ind./CIA at 62 kg/136.5 lbs.
Martinez was a 2015 Cadet World silver medalist and 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist. Martinez won a 2019 WCWA National title and a 2019 NAIA National Invitational title as a freshman for Menlo College. She won four California state titles for Selma High School. He boasts four Fargo national titles (two as a Junior and two as a Cadet).
Boyd won a 2017 Cadet World silver medal and a 2016 Cadet World bronze medal. She has won Junior National titles in both freestyle and folkstyle. Boyd is a rising freshman for McKendree University.
The other two past age-group World medalists are Gracie Figueroa (Selma, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. and Korinahe Bullock (Chahokia, Ill./Titan Mercury WC/McKendree Bearcat WC) at 76 kg/167 lbs.
Figueroa won a Cadet World bronze medal in 2016. She has been on three past U.S. Cadet World Teams, and will be competing on her second U.S. Junior World Team. Figueroa was a WCWA National champion for Menlo College this year, and also like Martinez, she won four California state titles for Selma High School.
Bullock came home with a U23 World bronze medal in 2018 in her first World Championships appearance. She was a member of the 2018-19 Senior Women’s National Team after placing second in the 2018 Final X to four-time World champion Adeline Gray. Bullock is a two-time WCWA All-American for McKendree University.
The four team members who also have age-group World Championship experience are Alex Hedrick (Fair Oaks, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Cameron Guerin (Yakima, Wash./Titan Mercury WC/EAP) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs., Jayden Laurent (Denmark, Wis./Titan Mercury WC) at 68 kg/149.75 lbs. and Alyvia Fiske (Napa, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 72 kg/158 lbs.
Hedrick competed on the 2018 Junior World Team. She was No. 2 on the 2017-18 Senior Women’s National Team, after falling to 2016 Olympic champion Helen Maroulis in a Final X Special Wrestle-off in 2018. Hedrick was a 2018 U.S. Senior Open champion, and was a 2019 Pan American Senior Championships gold medalist. Hedrick is a WCWA All-American for Simon Fraser, and won two California state titles for Bella Vista High School.
Guerin placed fifth in the 2017 Junior World Championships, qualifying for a medal match at her weight class. She has twice been third at the U.S. Senior Open, and won the Senior-level Grand Prix of Germany this year. She boasts Pan American Championships titles as both a Junior and a Cadet. Also a Junior Nationals champion, Guerin won four state high school titles for Davis High School in Washington. She became an EAP athlete at the USOPTC this past year in her first year after high school.
Laurent was a member of the 2018 U.S. Junior World Team. She has made the last two U.S. Senior National Teams, placing No. 3 on the ladder in 2018 and 2019. Laurent won the Senior Canada Cup this season. She was a 2019 U.S. Senior Open runner-up and was third in 2018. Laurent won a 2019 WCWA national title as a freshman at Lakeland University and is now with the Badger RTC.
Fiske was also a 2018 Junior World Team member. She won the 2019 U23 World Team Trials, and will compete at the U23 World Championships in October. Fiske is currently No. 2 on the Senior Women’s National Team, after placing second at the 2019 Final X. She won a U.S. Senior Open title in 2019. Add in a gold medal at the 2019 Dave Schultz Memorial International, to boot. She was third in the 2019 WCWA Nationals for Simon Fraser, and won two California state titles for Vintage High School.
The only team member who hasn’t been to the World Championships yet is Michaela Beck (New York, N.Y./New York AC/Hawkeye WC) at 59 kg/130 lbs. Yet her record stands up right alongside her teammates. Beck was a member of the 2018-19 U.S. Senior National Team, after taking third on the ladder. She was a 2018 U.S. Senior Open runner-up. Beck won the Senior-level Flatz Open in Austria, and boasts Pan American age-group medals as both a Junior and a Cadet. A 2016 Junior Nationals champion, Beck is now a member of the Hawkeye WC, the respected RTC at the University of Iowa.
Is it possible that this talented and experienced team could get on a roll, and battle for a number of medals and be in the thick of the team race for the Junior World Team title? Based upon past performance, this team has every right to expect to do very well in Tallinn next week.
Women’s freestyle is the second style contested at Junior World Championships, with three days of competition from August 14-16. Each weight class will compete over two days, with semifinals on the first day and medal matches on the second day.
Medal match finals for the five weight classes, will be on Thursday, August 15. The U.S. athletes at those weight classes are 50 kg (Martinez), 55 kg (Hedrick), 59 kg (Beck), 68 kg (Laurent), 76 kg (Bullock)
