Cadet World silver medalist Richard Figueroa among top UWW Cadet wrestlers competing at FloNationals this weekend
by JD Rader, USA Wrestling
With USA Wrestling agreeing to use FloNationals as a trials to determine the 2019 Cadet Pan American Championships team, this year’s FloNationals in Indiana, Penn., April 18-20, will be the first time FloNationals will be a freestyle and Greco-Roman event instead of folkstyle.
With the U.S. only sending one representative per weight who will wrestle both styles, the process to make the team will use a point system. The top eight place winners in both styles will get a certain number of points. The higher the place, the more the points. The wrestler at each weight with the most points will represent the U.S. at the Cadet Pan American Championships in Morelia, Mexico, June 28-30.
This year’s FloNationals are also being used as a separation criteria (similar to seeding) for UWW Cadet Nationals in Akron, Ohio, May 31 – June 2. Making the finals of this year’s FloNationals is the third criteria, with second being making last year’s Fargo finals and/or last year’s Akron finals, and the top criteria being a returning world medalist.
The UWW Cadet entries, as of midday Wednesday, April 17, are highlighted by 2018 Cadet World silver medalist in men’s freestyle Richard Figueroa (Sanger, Calif./Sunkist Kids/Monster Garage) and 2018 men’s freestyle Cadet World Team member Chance Lamer (Corvallis, Ore./Orange Crush WC). These two wrestlers are now at the same weight and both entered in the men’s freestyle 51 kg bracket.
Returning from 2018 Pan American teams is Marc-Anthony McGowan (Tampa, Fla./Ramos Training WC) who won gold medals in both men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman at last year’s U15 Pan American Championships, and Sheldon Seymour (Troy, Penn./X Calibur), who won gold medals in both men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman at last year’s Cadet Pan-American Championships.
In addition to these top young wrestlers, many more highly credentials UWW Cadet wrestlers will be competing including Fargo champions, Folkstyle Nationals champions, and individual state champions.
Action will begin Friday and can be streamed live on FloWrestling.org.
