by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
David Taylor (Nittany Lion WC) won a Senior World title on his first attempt last October in Budapest, Hungary. Taylor, who had been dominant on the international level for a number of years, finally earned a bid to the 2018 Senior World Championships, competing at 86 kg in men’s freestyle.
Receiving one of the toughest draws in the entire tournament, Taylor had to face 2016 Olympic champion and 2017 World champion Hassan Yazdani Charati of Iran in the first round. Taylor won the bout, storming back in the second period with nine unanswered points for an 11-6 win.
Taylor went on to beat Medved champion Hajy Rajabau of Belarus, four-time Pan American Championship medalist Yurieski Torreblanca Queralta of Cuba, three-time Ivan Yarygin champion Dauren Kurugliev of Russia and top-seeded Fatih Erdin of Turkey for the 2018 World title at 86 kg.
Above is his first-round match against Yazdani Charati.
