Schultz wins Junior World bronze, Bey takes fifth in Slovakia

TRNAVA, Slovakia – 2017 Cadet World Champion Cohlton Schultz added another World medal to his growing collection, earning bronze at 130 kg at the 2018 Junior World Championships in Trnava, Slovakia, on Tuesday night.

“I have the best coaches in the world, and I believe that,” Schultz said. “I think winning that (Cadet) World title last year was big in giving me that confidence that I’m here to win and I’m here to beat everybody. I’m still bummed. I wanted a gold medal, but getting bronze is huge. I’m happy, but I’m hungry still. I want that gold medal at the next level.”

After falling in a close semifinals match last night to David Ovasapyan of Armenia, Schultz bounced back in his bronze-medal match to secure Junior-level hardware with a win over Ante Milkovic of Croatia.

Milkovic scored first on a step out, but shortly after, he was hit with passivity, giving Schultz a point and the opportunity on top in par terre. There, the Colorado native scored on a gut wrench before both wrestlers were brought back up to their feet. Schultz carried a 3-1 lead into the break.

In the second period, the American scored on a takedown and in the final seconds, he was awarded a caution and two to end the bout with a 7-1 decision and his first Junior-level medal.

This is Schultz’s second-consecutive trip to the Junior World Championships. Last year, he went 0-1 in Finland.

In November, Schultz will return to the World stage to represent the United States at the U23 World Championships in Bucharest, Romania.

Also competing for bronze was 77 kg wrestler Kamal Bey, who faced off against Akzhol Makhmudov of Kyrgyzstan in a rematch of last year’s Junior World finals. This time, the result was reversed as Makhmudov won tonight’s matchup.

Bey was on the board first, drawing passivity from his opponent. Down in par terre, Bey went for a big lift but Makhmudov got on top for two points and tried for a reverse lift. Bey was then hit with a caution and two for a leg foul to trail early, 4-1.

Moments later, the Kyrgyzstan wrestler picked up another four points on a throw and carried an 8-1 lead into the break.

Despite some aggressive wrestling from both competitors, no points were scored in the final period, and Makhmudov walked away with a World bronze medal.

Set to wrap up USA’s Greco tournament at the Junior World Championships is 82 kg finalist Andrew Berreyesa, who will wrestle three-time age-group World champion Aleksander Kamorov of Russia for gold.

The 2018 Junior World Championships Greco-Roman competition wraps up Wednesday, starting at 10:30 a.m. local time (4:30 a.m. ET).
