MINSK, Belarus – With three straight technical falls on Friday, Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) has powered into the Alexander Medved International gold-medal finals at 50 kg/110 lbs., which are scheduled for Saturday.

In the semifinals, Anthony needed just 3:43 to secure a 10-0 technical fall over 2018 Russian National runner-up Elena Vostrikova of Russia in the semifinals. She has drawn Valentina Islamova of Kazakhstan in the gold-medal finals. Islamova, who was fifth in the 2015 World Championships for Russia, is now competing for Kazakhstan.

Anthony, a two-time Senior World Team member, won both of her Friday morning bouts by technical fall, putting away Aisha Ualishan of Kazakhstan, 11-0 and Irina Borissova of Kazakhstan, 15-4.

Isaiah Martinez (Champaign, Ill./Titan Mercury WC/Illini WC) was edged in the men’s freestyle 74 kg/163 lbs. semifinal by Azamat Nurykau of Belarus, 8-5. Nurykau was fifth in the 2014, 2015 and 2017 World Championships.

Martinez hit a first-period four-point move to take a 5-2 lead, and was ahead 5-4 at the break. No more points were scored until about the last 12 seconds, when Nurykau scored a takedown and gutwrench for four points to secure the victory.

Martinez also won his first two bouts, stopping Ivan Kusyak of Ukraine, 8-0 and Andrius Mazeika of Lithuania, 11-8. He will battle the winner of the Saturday repechage bout between Magomed Dibirgadzhiev of Russia and Ali Zakariev of Ukraine for the bronze medal.

Also in a bronze-medal match on Saturday will be 2016 Olympian and 2017 World Team member Haley Augello (Chapel Hill, N.C./Sunkist Kids/Tarheel WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. She will face Marina Simonyan of Russia in the bronze-medal bout.

Augello was leading in her opening match against 2016 Junior World silver medalist Maria Sedniva of Kazakhstan, but was rolled and pinned in 3:47. When Sedniva reached the finals, Augello was pulled back into a bronze-medal bout.

Two other U.S. wrestlers who lost Friday morning bouts have been brought back into repechage on Saturday morning with a chance to battle back for bronze: Joey McKenna (Towaco, N.J./Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) at 65 kg and Ty Walz (Blacksburg, Va./Titan Mercury WC/SERTC) at 97 kg. Both were U23 World medalists last year.

McKenna dropped his opening to three-time World champion Haji Aliev of Azerbaijan, who made the finals. Walz won his first bout, before a loss to 2014 World University champion Fatih Yasarli of Turkey, and was brought back in when Yasarli reached the gold-medal match.

TrackWrestling is attempting to stream the event for free. Five other U.S. wrestlers will start action on Saturday (check out their weigh in story). Minsk is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone.
