BUDAPEST, Hungary – All four U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers who competed on Thursday morning at the World Championships at the Papp Laszlo Arena lost their first matches.
The only U.S. athlete still eligible for repechage is Sam Hazewinkel (Guthrie, Okla./Sunkist Kids), who was defeated in his first match by No. 1 seed Ekrem Ozturk of Turkey, in an 8-0 technical fall. Ozturk, a 2018 World University champion, hit a four-point throw and two turns to secure the technical fall.
Ozturk won his quarterfinal match, and will face Zholaman Sharshenbekov of Kyrgyzstan in the semifinal round, which is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Budapest. If Ozturk wins his semifinal, Hazewinkel will be eligible for Friday morning’s repechage.
The other three U.S. athletes who competed will not be eligible for repechage.
2016 Olympian Jesse Thielke, Beresford, S.D. (New York AC/Legends of Gold) lost a close 8-7 decision in the first round to 2018 European bronze medalist Donior Islamov of Moldova.
Thielke came out strong, getting on a passivity point against Islamov, then hitting two gut wrenches for a 5-0 lead. Islamov came right back with a takedown, then turned Thielke twice to take a 6-5 lead at the break. In the second period, a two-point arm throw stretched Islamov’s lead to 8-5. Late in the bout, Islamov was hit for a two-point penalty for fleeing, getting Thielke within one point, but time ran out to give the Moldovan the win.
Islamov won his next bout, but Theilke was eliminated when Islamov lost in the quarterfinals to three-time World medalist Elmurat Tasmuradov of Uzbekistan.
At 72 kg, RaVaughn Perkins (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) dropped a tight 8-7 decision in the opening round to 2018 University World champion Murat Dag of Turkey.
Perkins got the first point on a passivity call and hit a gut wrench for a 3-0 lead. Dag scored a takedown, then a four-point lift and throw for a 6-3 lead at the break. In the second, Dag forced a stepout, but Perkins responded with a takedown to close it to 7-5. Dag scored on another stepout, and Perkins got another takedown to make it 8-7. Perkins was unable to score from his feet in the final minute and Dag earned the win.
Perkins was eliminated, not eligible for repechage, when Dag lost his next match to 2017 World bronze medalist Mohammadali Geraei of Iran.
Geordan Speiller (Oviedo, Fla./Florida Jets) was defeated in his first match by injury default at 82 kg/180.5 lbs. against Luis Avendano Rojas of Venezuela at the 4:52 mark.
Avendano jumped to a 4-0 lead with a passivity point a two-point lift and a stepout. In the second period, Speiller took a 5-4 lead after getting a penalty point, then hitting two gut wrenches. Avendano scored two takedowns to take an 8-5 lead. With eight seconds left, Speiller went down, and medical staff stopped the match due to an arm injury to Speiller.
Speiller’s injury may have prevented his return. However, he became ineligible for repechage in any case when Avendano was defeated in his next match by Emra Kus of Turkey.
The semifinal round begins at 4:30 p.m. in Budapest, which is eight hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time. The World Championships are being broadcast by TrackWrestling.
