Snyder, Green, Burkert, Winchester get draws for World Championships in Budapest

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Two U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers and two U.S. women’s freestyle wrestlers received their draws for the World Wrestling Championships. Competition in their weight classes begin on Monday at the Papp Laszlo Arena.


This is the final set of athletes in the men’s freestyle tournament at the World Championships, with two weight classes being contested


At 97 kg/213.75 lbs., 2016 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Kyle Snyder (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) opens up against Baasanjargal Ulziikhan of Mongolia, who was third in the 2018 Buryatia Republic Cup in Russia.


Also in Snyder’s half-bracket is two-time World bronze medalist Pavlo Oliynik of host Hungary.


The opposite side of the bracket from Snyder is loaded. Included are 2016 Olympic champion, 2014 and 2015 World champion and 2017 World silver medalist Abdulrashid Sadulaev of Russia, 2017 World bronze medalist Aslanbek Alborov of Azerbaijan, 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Magomed Ibragimov of Uzbekistan and Elizbar Odikadze of Georgia (fifth in World/Olympics three times)


In addition to his gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Snyder has also won two World Championship gold medals (2015, 2017). He will attempt to win a fourth straight World or Olympic title. Snyder also has won a Junior World title and a Junior World bronze medal. A three-time NCAA champion and four-time finalist for Ohio State, he hails from Woodbine, Md.


At 70 kg/154 lbs., two-time World medalist James Green (Lincoln, Neb./Titan Mercury WC/Nebraska WTC) battles 2018 Junior World champion Khadzimurad Gadzhiyev of Azerbaijan in the first round.


Also in Green’s half-bracket are 2015 World champion Magomedrasul Gazimagomedov of Russia, 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Ikhtiyor Navruzov of Uzbekistan and 2017 World champion Zurabi Iakobishvili of Georgia.


On the opposite side away from Green are 2014 World bronze medalist Mihail Sava of Moldova, 2013 and 2017 Pan American champion Franklin Maren Castillo of Cuba and 2013 World champion David Safaryan of Armenia.


Green won a World silver medal in 2017 and a World bronze medal in 2015. He was also a member of the 2016 U.S. World Team. He was a silver medalist at the 2014 University World Championships. A four-time All-American for Nebraska, Green is from Willingboro, N.J.


This is the start of the women’s freestyle competition at the World Championships, with two weight classes getting underway.


At 59 kg/130 lbs., Jenna Burkert (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) opens against 2014 Asian silver medalist Shoovdor Baatarjav of Mongolia.


Also in her half-bracket are 2016 World bronze medalist Linda Morais of Canada and 2015 World bronze medalist Elif Jale Yesilirmak of Turkey


On the opposite half-bracket away from Burkert are 2016 Olympic champion and 2017 World champion Risako Kawai of Japan, 2016 World champion Xingru Pei of China and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and 2017 World silver medalist Marwa Amri of Tunisia


Burkert will compete in her second Senior World Championships, after also wrestling in the 2014 World Championships in Uzbekistan. She also competed on three U.S. Junior World Teams, and placed fifth at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Burkert was on the women’s team at the Northern Michigan Olympic Training Site in high school and the start of college. A member of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, she is originally from Rocky Point, N.Y.


At 55 kg/121 lbs., Jacarra Winchester (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC/OTC) will open her first Senior World competition against 2018 University World champion Ramona Galambos of host Hungary.


Also in her half-bracket are 2017 World bronze medalist Roksana Zasina of Poland, 2015 World bronze medalist Tetyana Kit of Ukraine and 2012 World silver medalist Zalina Sidakova of Belarus.


On the opposite half-bracket away from Winchester are 2016 World champion and 2017 World silver medalist Mayu Mukaida of Japan, two-time World silver medalist, Irina Olgonova of Russia, two-time World bronze medalist Jong Myong Suk of North Korea, 2009 World champion and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Sofia Mattsson of Sweden,


Winchester is competing in her first Senior World Championships. She has made four U.S. Senior National Teams. Winchester won a bronze medal at the World University Championships. She was a WCWA national champion for Missouri Valley College, and hails from Castro Valley, Calif.


Competition begins at 10:30 a.m. Budapest time on Monday morning, which is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone. The event is being broadcast by TrackWrestling.
