Dake, Cox reach World freestyle finals with semifinal wins, Gilman to go for bronze on Monday

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Two U.S. wrestlers won semifinal matches on Saturday night, and will advance to the gold-medal finals in their weight class on Monday night, 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and 2017 World bronze medalist J’den Cox (Colorado Springs, Colo. (Titan Mercury WC/OTC) at 92 kg/202.5 lbs. and first-time World Team member Kyle Dake, Ithaca, N.Y. (Titan Mercury WC/New York RTC) at 79 kg/174 lbs.
Cox defeated 2015 World bronze medalist Alireza Karimimachiani of Iran in the semifinals, 5-2. In the second period, Cox led 3-2, scoring his points on a shot clock violation, a stepout and a reversal, while Karimimachiani had his two points from a takedown. Cox put the match away with a takedown on the edge late in the period.
It was the third straight year that Cox had made a World-level semifinals, after dropping matches in that round at the 2016 Olympics and 2017 World Championships. He has clinched a third World-level medal in a row by qualifying for the finals.
In the gold-medal match, Cox will battle 2010 World Military silver medalist Ivan Yankouski of Belarus, who will win a medal for the first time at a Senior-level World Championships.
On Sunday morning, Cox scored a 6-2 win over past World medalist Dato Marsagishvili of Georgia, then stopped Nicolai Ceban of Moldova, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
Dake was once again dominant, scoring a 13-0 technical fall over 2018 European champion Akhmed Gazhimagomedov of Russia in the semifinals. Gazhimagomedov was the No. 1 seed and Dake was the No. 4 seed at the weight class. Dake blasted the match open in the first period, going to the break with an 8-0 lead, including a four-point throw. In the second period, he nailed down the match with a big five-point throw.
Dake will battle Olympic bronze medalist and two-time World bronze medalist Jabrayil Hasanov of Azerbaijan in Monday night’s finals.
Dake dominanted the morning session with a pair of technical falls over Martin Obst of Germany, 11-0 and Davit Khutsishvili of Georgia, 11-0.
Dake was a four-time NCAA champion at Cornell. His only previous World Championships came at the Junior level when he was in high school and was in Greco-Roman.
Qualifying for a bronze-medal match at 57 kg/125.5 lbs., was 2017 World bronze medalist Thomas Gilman, Iowa City, Iowa (Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC)..
In his semifinal, Gilman was defeated by Nurislam Sanayev of Kazakhstan in an 11-0 technical fall. Sanayev led 2-0 at the break, but after a second period takedown, he got a pair of turns. A challenge was denied, making it 9-0. Sanayev got a final takedown to close out the win.
At this weight, both of the 2017 finalists were beaten in the semifinals, as Zavur Uguev of Russia defeated 2017 World champion Yuki Takahashi of Japan, 7-2.
Gilman scored a pair of decisions on Sunday morning, stopping Givi Davidovi of Italy, 6-3 and Giorgi Edisherashvili of Azerbaijan, 4-0.
His bronze-medal opponent will be determined in repechage action in the morning.
Gilman, a three-time NCAA All-American for Iowa, is wrestling in his second straight Senior Worlds. He was a Junior World bronze medalist earlier in his career.
2016 World champion Logan Stieber (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) was eliminated and is not eligible for repechage. Stieber lost his opening bout to 2016 World bronze medalist Akhmed Chakaev of Russia, 7-5. Chakaev reached the semifinals, where he was upset by Takuto Otoguro of Japan, 15-10. Chakaev needed to reach the finals for Stieber to get back into repechage.
