UPDATE: Michael Peters of USA to compete in Beach World Championships in Turkey, October 6-7

SARIGERME-ORTACA, MUGLA, Turkey - Michael Peters of Quincy, Ill. (Road Dawgs WC) will represent the United States at the Beach World Championships for the second straight year. The competition will be held in the seaside resort of Sarigerme-Ortaca, Turkey, October 6-7.


Peters is entered in the 70 kg weight class on the Senior level and is the only U.S. entry this year.


Peters is a sophomore at Div. II powerhouse Maryville University and competed at Quincy High School in Illinois.

UPDATE: Peters has received his draw for the tournament. He is placed in a four-man pool, and will battle Evgheni Volcov of Romania, Jose Santana Delgado of Spain and Mehmet Ogut of Turkey. There are 20 athletes in his weight class this year.

He placed fifth at 70 kg at the 2017 Beach World Championships, which was held in Dalyan, Turkey. Peters won his first two matches and reached the semifinals, when he was edged by two-time Beach World champion Mohammad Naderi of Iran. Peters was also beaten in his bronze-medal bout by Veli Yantir of Turkey.


Peters won a gold medal at the 2017 U.S. Beach National Championships in Carolina Beach, N.C., and won a silver medal at the 2018 Beach National Championships, also held in Carolina Beach.


Donnie Peters, who is Michael’s father and an NCEP bronze certified coach, will be coaching Michael during the competition.


The Senior competition will be held on both Saturday, October 6 and Sunday, October 7. Sarigerme-Ortaca is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone. A live stream will be provided by United World Wrestling.


The 2018 World Championships competition is a qualifying event for the 2019 World Beach Games in San Diego, Calif., October 9-14.


Rusty Davidson of the United States is the head official of the Beach World Championships. Davidson also serves on USA Wrestling’s Ad-Hoc Associated Styles Committee.


The United States has won a number of medals in past Beach World Championships, but has yet to win a gold medal.


Donovan DePatto of the U.S. Marine Corps won a 2011 Beach World silver medal, the first and only silver medalist in U.S. history. U.S. wrestlers who have won two Beach World bronze medals are Jeff Funicello and Carlos Dolmo. Other men who have won World bronze medals are Ike Okoli, Ray Downey and Angelo Borzio. U.S. women who won Beach World bronze medals were Leigh Jaynes, Bethany Harris and Tanya Miyasaki.


The USA has been competing in international Beach wrestling since 2006. Beach Wrestling is included in USA Wrestling’s growing Associated Styles program, which also includes Grappling, Belt Wrestling, Pahlavani Wrestling and the Veterans wrestling division.
