Starting in 2017, United World Wrestling, the international wrestling federation, capped the Veterans age group at 60 years old. This eliminated competition for Veterans athletes in what used to be called the Div. F and Div. G.

There are a number of wrestlers in the United States who became too old for international UWW Veterans competition, but still enjoy the challenge of wrestling competition. What to do?

In the United States, athletes over 25 years old compete in what is called the Masters divisions. USA Wrestling has hosted competition at its Masters Nationals in these older age-categories no longer conducted by UWW, and a number of athletes from other nations have come to wrestle in our U.S. national tournament.

This led some leaders within the U.S. Masters community to put together a Masters World Championships for Divisions F and G, which will kick off this weekend in Henderson, Nev. at Green Valley High School.

A number of well-known Masters wrestlers from the United States will compete on Friday and Saturday, as well as some other athletes from Russia, Poland and England.

Although the pre-registration numbers for the first Masters F&G World Championships is not large this year, those in the Masters wrestling community who helped organize the event are looking to establish an annual event that attracts other athletes from around the world who are 61 years old through 70 years old. It will not only be a chance for good competition, but also another opportunity for international goodwill within the wrestling community.

Among the Americans in Masters Div. G are past World champions Shirzad Ahmadi of Connecticut and John Hughes of Arizona. Ahmadi won an amazing 13 Veterans World title during his career. Hughes was the first U.S. athlete to win a Veterans World gold medal in Greco-Roman.

Among some of the most active and successful U.S. Masters wrestlers in Div. F this weekend are Bruce Moe of North Dakota, Steve Contarino of Florida and Kevin Hejnal of California.

The Greco-Roman tournament will be held on Friday, November 30, starting at 4:00 p.m. Pacific time. The freestyle tournament will be held on Saturday, December 1, starting at 9:00 a.m. This will be streamed live on TrackWrestling, with brackets and archived video also housed there.
