U.S. women stars Hedrick, Reyna, Gladden, Marano and Gabaldon win SFU International titles

BURNABY, B.C., Canada - Five U.S. wrestlers, representing their college programs, won gold medals in the women’s freestyle division at the SFU International on Saturday.
Athletes from the USA, representing colleges in both the United States and Canada, won a total of 17 medals in this respected international tournament.
Included was Alex Hedrick, a California native who is currently No. 2 on the U.S. Senior Women’s National Team, who won the 55 kg gold medal for the host Simon Fraser University.
Hedrick defeated her SFU teammate and fellow Californian Lauren Mason in the finals, 6-1. She scored a pair of technical falls to reach the gold-medal match.
Hedrick won the 2018 U.S. Open and 2018 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament , and lost a Special Wrestle-off to 2016 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Helen Maroulis on the way to her No. 2 national ranking in the USA. She was second in the 2018 WCWA College Nationals for SFU as a freshman. She was also a member of the U.S. Junior World Team in 2018.
Two of the champions at the SFU International, Brenda Reyna of McKendree at 59 kg and Hanna Gladden of Emmanuel at 68 kg, are No. 3 on the U.S. Senior Women’s National team, after both taking second at the 2018 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament .
Reyna, a native of Washington, defeated another Washington native, Marizza Birrueta of Emmanuel, in the finals by technical fall, 13-2. She finished the meet with a 3-0 record. Reyna has been a two-time U.S. Junior World Team member.
Gladden, who hails from Alabama, won three straight close matches, all by just one point. In the finals, she stopped California native Alyvia Fiske of Simon Fraser, 4-3. She also had a wild 15-14 semifinal victory over Iman Kazem of Menlo. Gladden is a two-time WCWA All-American.
Claiming the gold medal at 65 kg was Kayla Marano of Emmanuel, who competed in high school in Georgia and Oklahoma. Marano defeated New Jersey native Skyar Grote of Brock in the finals, 9-1, and had a perfect 4-0 record in the tournament. Marano was third at the 2018 WCWA Nationals as a freshman. She won a Cadet World bronze medal for Team USA in 2015.
Oregon native Kiera Gabaldon of Warner Pacific won a four-athlete round robin at 72 kg with a perfect 3-0 record. Her biggest win came in round two, when she secured a 10-0 technical fall over Final X runner-up Rachel Watters of Oklahoma City, 10-0. Watters is a native of Iowa. Gabaldon is a two-time WCWA All-American.
U.S. athletes winning silver medals along with Mason, Birrueta, Fiske, Grote and Watters were Michigan native Theresa Rankin of McKendree at 53 kg and California native Precious Bell of Menlo at 76 kg.
Americans with bronze medals in the tournament were California native Alleida Martinez of Menlo at 50 kg, California native Tiana Jackson of Menlo at 55 kg, Washington native Erin Redford of Oklahoma City at 59 kg, Texas native Felicity Bryant of Emmanuel at 65 kg, Iowa native Jasmine Bailey of the McKendree WC ant 72 kg and Colorado native Emily Cue of Simon Fraser at 76 kg.
