SASSARI, Italy – Three U.S. wrestlers competed in Greco-Roman at the City of Sassari International on Saturday, a tournament held in memory of long-time international leader Matteo Pellicone.
Morgan Flaharty (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), finished 2-2 at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. in a round-robin competition, and emerged with a silver medal in his weight class.
Flaharty dropped a match to eventual champion Azamat Akhmedov of Russia in the third-round, and had a one-point loss to Oscar Parra of Spain. His two wins, which included a 7-4 victory over Ignacio San Fillippo of Italy, were enough to give him the silver medal, based upon points. His other win was an injury default over Michele Zicche of Canada.
Flaharty, who trains at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, is a California native and competed at UC-Davis at one point of his career.
At 97 kg/211.5 lbs., Kevin Beazley (Highland, Mich./New York AC) won a bronze medal, defeating Kwon Jeong Sol of Korea in the bronze-medal match by technical fall, 13-4.
In the first period, Beazley blocked a throw and scored three gut wrenches for an apparent technical fall, but a challenge by the Korean was upheld and no points were awarded. Kwon hit a four-point throw to lead 4-0. A Beazley takedown was then challenged by Kwon and denied making it 4-3 at the break in favor of the Korean.
Beazley scored a counter takedown to lead 5-4 early in the second period. He ended the bout with a bodylock takedown, followed by three consecutive high gut wrenches. This was a rematch of a win by Beazley earlier in the day during the pool competition.
Beazley won three matches in his pool competition to qualify for the cross-bracketed semifinals. He opened with an 11-0 technical fall over Kwon Jeong Sol of Korea, then stopped Jesus Gasca of Spain, 8-5.
A strange situation happened in the third pool match between Beazley and 2017 U.S. World Team member G’Angelo Hancock. Both American wrestlers were called to the mat. Beazley appeared on the mat. Hancock, who had just finished another bout, was talking with tournament officials and seeking the get his full 20 minute rest time, to no avail. The referee raised Beazley’s arm, and when Hancock appeared on the mat, they would not let him wrestle, even though Beazley asked to compete.
In the semifinals, Beazley lost to El Mahdi Roccaro of Italy, who hit a pair of arm throws to secure an 11-2 technical fall. Beazley was thrown for four early and rolled through for two exposure points, but Roccaro reversed him for another two point exposure. Roccaro tried another arm throw, which Beazley seemed to block and roll through with, but officials scored it as a four-pointer for the Italian. The Beazley challenge was denied.
Beazley started his college career at Old Dominion, where he was eighth in the 2017 NCAA Championships. After graduating from ODU, he had another year of eligibility, which he spent as a graduate student at Michigan. Beazley qualified for the 2018 NCAA Championships but could not compete due to injury.
Beazley was a member of the 2015-16 Senior Greco-Roman World Team, placing second in the World Team Trials. He also made two Junior World Greco-Roman teams.
By winning medals, Flaharty and Beazley qualify to compete in the Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Tulsa, Okla. in June.
Hancock had two victories to start his tournament, beating Jesus Gasca of Spain, 5-0 and getting a 12-4 technical fall over Kwon Jeong Sol of Korea. After dropping his bout by forfeit, he was not able to advance to the semifinals.
