United World Wrestling released its May 2018 Ranking Series standings in Greco-Roman, and six U.S. wrestlers were ranked in the top 19 of their weight class.
The highest ranked American Greco-Roman wrestler was 2016 Olympian and four-time World Team member Robby Smith, who came in at No. 10 at 130 kg. Smith won a silver medal at the 2018 Pan American Championships in Peru.
The 2018 season is the first in which United World Wrestling is utilizing an objective ranking system. The points acquired at continental championships and select rankings series will determine the top four seeded athletes at the 2018 World Championships in October held in Budapest.
Next in the rankings from the USA was No. 11 Ryan Mango at 63 kg. Mango won the gold medal at the 2018 Pan American Championships in Peru.
Two-time Olympian Ben Provisor was the next American in Greco-Roman, at No. 14 at 87 kg. Provisor won a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships in Greco-Roman. He is the only American to be ranked in both styles, also holding the No. 14 ranking at 97 kg in men’s freestyle, after going up a weight as a replacement and winning a gold medal in freestyle at the Pan American Championships.
There are two Americans at No. 15 in their weight class standings, Max Nowry at 55 kg and Ravaughn Perkins at 72 kg. Nowry won a silver medal and Perkins won a gold medal at the Pan American Championships.
The other American in the standings is No. 19 Geordan Speiller at 82 kg, a silver medalist at the Pan American Championships.
Although it does not count towards the UWW Ranking Series, all six of the U.S. wrestlers in the UWW standings were also champions at the Marine Corps U.S. Open in Las Vegas in April.
Cuba has two No. 1 athletes in the May UWW standings, Olympic champion Ismael Borrero at 67kg and Oscar Pino Hinds at 130 kg. Kyrgyzstan also has a pair of top-ranked Greco-Roman wrestlers, K. Zholchubekov at 60 kg and U. Amatov at 63 kg.
