Kanamti Solomon, 45, a past Freestyle National Team member who placed second in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 8 in Delaware.
A service for Solomon is set for Friday, June 15 at the Congo Funeral Home, 2317 Market Street, Wilmington DE 19802. The viewing will be from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., with the service to follow at 5:00 p.m. Family and friends will spend time together after the service.
Solomon was a nationally ranked freestyle wrestler at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., the lightest weight class in men’s wrestling. He placed second in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Spokane, Wash., reaching the finals where he was beaten by Olympian Rob Eiter. He was a 1997 U.S. Open champion.
Solomon was also second in the 1995 U.S. World Team Trials and the 1996 U.S. Open. Among his domestic titles was a 1989 Cadet National double title, winning both freestyle and Greco-Roman, as well as the 1994 University Nationals. He won a bronze medal at the 1994 Pan American Championships.
Solomon was a 1991 Delaware high school champion for New Castle High School and attended Delaware State for a time and Ashford University, where he finished and received a B.A. in Early Childhood Education. He competed in two Olympic cycles in freestyle wrestling.
He met the love of his life, Juanita Solomon, and they were married in 2012 in New Castle, DE. This union was blessed with two sons, Kanamti Solomon, Jr. and Syden Solomon.
Kanamti is survived by his wife, Juanita Solomon, along with three children, Kanamti Masahiko Solomon, Jr., Syden Stryker Solomon and Matthew Carroll. His father, James Solomon of Kinston, North Carolina; his mother, Maria Oromendia Solomon; brother, Makale “Max” Solomon of Spain; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, family and friends.

Kanamti Ruben Solomon was born on February 21, 1973, in Madrid, Spain. He departed this life on June 8, 2018, in Wilmington, Delaware. He was the oldest of two children born to James Solomon and Maria Oromendia Solomon.
He loved wrestling both as a competitor and coach. He enjoyed passing on his love for wrestling to everyone. His involvement with youth wrestling was his favorite. He taught and mentored many people in his lifetime; he never stopped passing on the knowledge he had to help others.
He loved spending time with his family, especially his children. In addition, he enjoyed traveling, golf, poker, watching the national soccer teams and the Pittsburgh Steelers football team on television.
