Mark Manning and Bryan Snyder named winners of 2017 Terry McCann Award as USA Wrestling Freestyle Co-Coaches of the Year

Mark Manning (Lincoln, Neb./Nebraska RTC) and Bryan Snyder (Lincoln, Neb./Nebraska RTC) have been named winners of the 2017 Terry McCann Freestyle Co-Coaches of the Year by USA Wrestling. This is the first time since the award was created in 1992 that it has recognized Co-Coaches of the Year.
It is the third time that Manning has won this prestigious award, to go along with his 2011 and 2015 Freestyle Coach of the Year honor. It is the first time that Snyder has received this honor.
Manning and Snyder work together as coaches for the Nebraska Regional Training Center, where a number of top men’s freestyle athletes train. They also lead the University of Nebraska wrestling team, where Manning serves as Head Coach and Snyder serves as the Associate Head Coach.
Manning and Snyder were personal coaches for two World finalists in 2017, World champion Jordan Burroughs at 74 kg and World silver medalist James Green at 70 kg. Manning and Snyder also coached Burroughs and Green at the Univ. of Nebraska. Burroughs won two NCAA Div. I titles (2009, 2011) and was named the 2011 Dan Hodge Trophy winner as the nation’s best college wrestler. Green was a four-time All-American for the Huskers.
Among Mark Manning’s past freestyle coaching achievements were:
• UWW’s International Freestyle Coach for 2011, the first U.S. recipient of the award in recent history.
• Olympic coach in men’s freestyle wrestling for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. The United States won two gold medals, by Jordan Burroughs and Jake Varner and a bronze medal by Coleman Scott.
• 2009 U.S. World Team Coach which competed at the World Championships in Herning, Denmark
• Head Coach for the 2001 U.S. Freestyle World Team and trained the team for the event. After the attack of September 11, the World Championships were moved from New York to Bulgaria and Manning could not attend the 2001 World Championships due to college coaching responsibilities.
• Coach with the 2000 Pan American Championships team, which claimed the team title.
• Head coach of the 1994 and 1996 Junior World teams, and also coached the 1992 Cadet World team.
• Served on the coaching staff of the 1996 and 2000 U.S. Olympic teams
• Served as USA Wrestling's National Developmental Coach during early 1993.
Manning has served 18 years as the head coach for Div. I wrestling powerhouse Nebraska, with a 234-88-3 record with the Huskers, the winningest coach in school history. Add in three seasons with Northern Iowa prior to coming to Nebraska, and Manning has 255 dual meet wins in 21 seasons as a head coach. He has led the Huskers to six top-eight finishes at the NCAA Championships. Manning also served assistant coaching stints at the Univ. of Oklahoma for four seasons and the Univ. of North Carolina for eight years.
Snyder has been an assistant coach at Nebraska for eight seasons, with five in the Associate Head Coach role. From 2011-12 to 2018-18 at Nebraska, Snyder assisted in helping the Huskers rack up 19 All-America honors. James Green earned All-America accolades four times, while Robert Kokesh and TJ Dudley each ended their careers as three-time All-Americans. Snyder also has assistant coaching experience at Arizona State and Harvard
As an athlete, Manning was an Olympic Trials finalist in 1988, and placed in the U.S. Nationals four times. He was a two-time NCAA Div. II national champion and three-time All-American for the Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha. He was a three-time South Dakota high school state champion from Vermillion, S.D.
Snyder was one of the greatest wrestlers in Nebraska history. He ranks No. 1 on Nebraska’s all-time winning percentage chart (.925), compiling a 136-11 record. He claimed All-America accolades and a Big 12 championship all four years, while finishing as the NCAA runner-up at 157 pounds in 2001 and 2002. Snyder was a three-time state place-winner and a 1997 state champion at Easton (Pa.) High School.
This award is named after the late wrestling legend Terry McCann, a 1960 Olympic champion wrestler. McCann was a long-time coach with the successful Mayor Daley Youth Foundation club, which won numerous national titles in freestyle and Greco-Roman and produced champion athletes for the United States. McCann also served as USA Wrestling President and a United World Wrestling Bureau member.
