Gehloff wins Triple Crown, Manville claims fourth Fargo title
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
FARGO, N.D. – Mason Gehloff of Minnesota won the prestigious USA Wrestling Triple Crown on Thursday, coming back from a late deficit in the last 10 seconds of the 88-pound finals to defeat Kai Owen of Florida at the USMC Cadet and Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D.
As he had done in his quarterfinal and semifinal matches, Gehloff grinded out a comeback win, scoring six points in the final 75 seconds, which included two throws.
“I don’t know [what it is that allows me to come from behind],” Gehloff said. “I just want it more. I just want to get the win, just try 110% to get it because isn’t over until the whistle is blown.”
Gehloff is the only Cadet to win a 2018 Triple Crown, after claiming the folkstyle national title in April and the freestyle national title earlier this week, where he wrestled at 88 pounds. The Minnesota wrestler was awarded the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler honor for his performance.
Carson Manville was the only 2017 champion to repeat a Cadet Greco title-winning performance, decisively defeating Camdyn Ingram of Louisiana, 7-1 for the 152-pound championship.
Not only did Manville, a 2018 Cadet World Team member, win his second-straight Cadet Greco title but he also became only the 16th wrestler in the event’s history to claim four Cadet Fargo titles as he also went back-to-back in freestyle in 2017 and 2018. Earlier this week for the freestyle tournament, Manville wrestled at 145 pounds.
“I just thought about it a couple weeks ago. It seems like just yesterday I was at Kids Nationals in Wisconsin, which is now moved to Georgia, and now I’m here on top of that big stage where some of the best guys in the world have come from,” Manville said.
Overall, the Pennsylvania native won the eighth title for his household as his brother, Mason, won four titles among the Cadet and Junior divisions during his youth days. He is also the second wrestler to win four titles, competing for two states.
At 138 pounds, Brayden Roberts became only the second Cadet Greco national champion for the state of West Virginia when he defeated Luke Welcher of Wisconsin with a 4-0 decision for the title.
The last wrestler to win Cadet Greco championship for West Virginia was Braxton Amos in 2016.
There were nine athletes who won their championship bouts by tech fall or pin.
At 88 pounds, Kaden Ramos of Idaho dominated the finals, finishing off Daniel Sheen of Illinois early in the second period with an 11-0 tech fall.
Ramos took an early 8-0 lead with a pair of throws in the first minute. To begin the second period, Ramos countered an attack from Sheen to win the bout. The call was challenged by Sheen’s corner but failed, resulting in an additional point for Ramos.
For the crown at 100 pounds, Kenndyl Mobley of Washington defeated Richard Treanor, who was only the third Cadet Greco finalist in history from North Carolina.
Mobley controlled the match with a takedown and two steps out en route to a 5-2 decision.
Pennsylvania’s Sheldon Seymour, a 2018 Cadet Pan American champion in both freestyle and Greco, went down early against Kenneth Crosby of Colorado, 6-0. Seymour battled back, putting Crosby to his back and getting the fall in 1:28.
There were back-to-back-to-back technical falls rattled off at the next three weights with Parker Decker of Texas (113), Haiden Drury of Washington (120) and Davin Rhoads of Ohio (126) all shutting out their opponents.
Decker and Washington put up 10-0 tech falls in the first period, while Rhoads finished off an 11-0 tech halfway through the second.
At 160 pounds, Adrian Cramer of Illinois stuck his opponent, Brayden Randolph of Michigan, in the first two minutes of the bout to win the stop sign. Cramer led Randolph, 8-4, at the time of the pin.
Cramer also earned the award for the most falls in the least amount of time, pinning his way through the tournament for six pins in 7:30.
Kolby Franklin won Pennsylvania its third Cadet Greco title of the day with a 14-4 tech fall over Brandon Hoselton of Illinois in the first period to grab the 195-pound championship.
Ending the Cadet Greco event in exciting fashion was Alex Coleman of Ohio, who sealed the heavyweight title with a 14-second fall over Colby Whitehill of Pennsylvania.
There were three weight classes that pitted state teammates against each other.
At 138 pounds, two champions were crowned as brothers Damien and Fabian Lopez of Illinois shook hands and were named Cadet Greco-Roman co-champions.
Californians Robert Perez III and Cael Valencia went at it for the title at 145 pounds. It was Perez who was victorious, earning a solid 7-0 shutout win.
For the 220-pound championship, Washington wrestlers Braxton Mikesell and Gage Cook went head-to-head. Mikesell scored often and walked away with a 12-5 victory.
To win at 170 pounds, Greyden Penner of Missouri, who took third in freestyle this week, had to go through 2018 Cadet freestyle finalist Sam Skillings of Wisconsin. Penner picked up an early lead on a four-point throw and didn’t slow down, winning, 7-2.
At 182 pounds, 2017 Cadet Greco runner-up Tyler Hannah of Wisconsin defeated Kyle Haas of Kansas, who was a Triple Crown contender entering Fargo. Hannah used a pair of second-period four-point throws to claim a 13-4 decision.
In the team race, Illinois won its sixth-consecutive and eighth overall Cadet Greco team title, putting up 85 points, which is the fourth-highest all-time scored by a team. Illinois also owns the other three highest point totals.
Taking second as a team was Washington with 56 points, and Pennsylvania rounded out the top-three with 47 points.
Fargo Nationals continue with the Junior Greco-Roman tournament, which will wrap up the event.
