FARGO, N.D. – The semifinals of the largest and most loaded U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Junior Nationals at the Fargodome on Wednesday morning met all expectations and more. The quality of the wrestling was very high, as top stars battled for a spot on the raised mat in the finals.
The two 2018 UWW Cadet World champions in the field, Emily Shilson of Minnesota (100) and Macey Kilty of Wisconsin (164) easily advance to the finals round.
Shilson put on a show in the semifinals against Sami Saribay of Hawaii, scoring two takedowns, two ankle laces and a leg tilt for a 10-0 technical fall in just 1:06. She will battle 2018 Cadet Nationals champion Sage Mortimer of Utah in the finals, who won her semifinal by pin over Estrella Dorado Marin of Colorado.
Kilty scored a 10-0 technical fall over Washington’s Lena Flanagan, nailing a five point back souplesse throw to end the match. Kilty will face unheralded Kaylynn Albrecht of Texas in the finals.
Both Shilson and Kilty are returning Junior champions. Eight of the nine returning 2017 Junior National champions won their semifinal matches and will return to the finals. Joining Shilson and Kilty on the raised stage are returning champions Vayle Baker of Pennsylvania (117), Alisha Howk of Wisconsin (122), , Alexandria Liles of Colorado (132), Emma Bruntil of Washington (138), Jayden Laurent of Wisconsin (144), and Alexandra Castillo of California (200).
The only 2017 Junior Nationals champion who was beaten in the semifinals was at 164 pounds. In another showcase semifinals, 2018 Cadet Nationals champion and 2018 UWW Cadet World Team member Tristan Kelly of Colorado scored a takedown in the final 10 seconds of the match to defeat 2017 Junior National champion Sydnee Kimber of Alaska, 5-4. Kelly’s takedown tied it at 4-4 and she had criteria, but Kimber’s corner challenged saying she got a late second reversal. The challenge was denied. Kimber was ranked No. 1 and Kelly ranked No. 2 coming into Fargo.
The highly anticipated semifinal battle at 138 pounds went to 2017 Junior Nationals champion Emma Bruntil of Washington, who defeated two-time UWW Cadet World medalist Alara Boyd of Indiana, 6-4. Bruntil had a No. 1 national ranking, while Boyd was ranked No. 3. Bruntil got the early lead and was able to maintain the edge against a hard-charging Boyd.
A mild upset of note came in the 132 pound semifinals, when No. 4 ranked Abnelis Yambo of Florida stopped No. 2 ranked Teniya Alo of Hawaii, 7-5. Alo was a Junior Nationals champion way back in 2015.
Another one of the big battles in the semifinals came at 122 pounds, where 2018 Cadet Nationals champion, Alexys Zepeda of Oregon scored an impressive 10-0 technical fall over 2016 Junior Nationals champion Cameron Guerin. Zepeda held a No. 8 national ranking, while Guerin was ranked No. 2 coming in. Zepeda draws returning champion Alisha Howk of Wisconsin in their gold-medal showdown.
Three of the 2018 Cadet National champions were able to advance to the Junior Nationals finals after securing semifinal wins on Wednesday morning. Zepeda will be joined in the Junior finals by fellow 2018 Cadet National champions Mia Palumbo of Illinois (106) and Jaycee Foeller of Missouri (180).
The championship finals and medal matches of the Women’s Junior Nationals will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will be live on FloWrestling.
