Cadet Greco semifinals set for Thursday morning in Fargo
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
FARGO, N.D. – The Cadet Greco-Roman national quarterfinals were sprinkled with upsets on Wednesday night, making way for an exciting semifinals session on Thursday.
2018 Cadet World Team member Carson Manville of Pennsylvania aims to win his fourth Fargo title after claiming the Cadet Freestyle championship earlier this week. Manville moved up one weight class to 152 pounds to compete in Greco.
Manville is the only 2017 Cadet Greco-Roman champion still alive in the championship side of the bracket.
At 106 pounds, returning Cadet Greco-Roman national champion Yusief Lillie of Washington fell in the quarterfinals to 2017 Cadet Greco All-American Cael Swensen of Minnesota, who placed seventh a year ago.
Lillie and Swensen competed at the same weight in 2017.
There are two 2017 Cadet Greco runners-up looking to top the podium this year, advancing to the semifinals—Fabian Lopez of Illinois at 132 pounds and Tyler Hannah of Wisconsin at 182 pounds.
Conor Knopick of Nebraska was a 2017 runner-up, who fell in the quarterfinals at 120 pounds to Caleb Henson of Georgia, who stormed back from an eight-point deficit to pull out an 11-10 decision.
The 94-pound semifinals will knock the number of Cadet Triple Crown hopefuls from two to one as the two wrestlers eligible, Mason Gehloff of Minnesota and Maxximus Martinez of California, will meet in tomorrow morning’s semifinals.
In addition to Gehloff and Martinez, there are four wrestlers aiming to double up after winning freestyle national championships earlier this week, counting Jesse Ybarra of Arizona at 120 pounds, Dominick Serrano of Colorado at 132 pounds, Joshua Edmond of Michigan at 138 pounds and Nathaniel Deasey of Arizona at 220 pounds.
2018 freestyle national champions Quayin Short of Minnesota at 160 pounds and Hayden Copass of Illinois at 285 pounds fell short of doubling up on Fargo titles, both losing in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
There were 26 different states which qualified a semifinalist in Cadet Greco-Roman. Defending team champion Illinois has the most semifinalists with 10, followed by Minnesota and Washington with five. Pushing four into the semifinals were Pennsylvania, Michigan, Texas, Ohio and Wisconsin.
The semifinals will begin Thursday morning at 9 a.m. CT with the finals scheduled for 1 p.m. live on Flowrestling.org.
