WHAT’S NEW: JUNIOR WOMEN’S FREESTYLE KICKS OFF

Junior women’s freestyle gets underway and powers through the round the round of 16. It will be the biggest, and most probably the most loaded Junior Women’s Freestyle Nationals ever.

To start, both UWW Cadet World champions from a week ago in Croatia are in the field and ready to compete: Emily Shilson of Minnesota (100) and Macey Kilty of Wisconsin (152). Both were Junior National champions last year.

They aren’t the only ones on that UWW Cadet World Team team coming back for Junior Nationals. Other team members doing both events are Kiana Pugh of Wisconsin (144) and Tristan Kelly of Colorado (164).

Counting Shilson and Kilty, there are nine 2017 Junior National champions who are in Fargo looking to repeat. Also on this impressive list are Vayle Baker of Pennsylvania (117), Alisha Howk of Wisconsin (122), Alexandria Liles of Colorado (132), Emma Bruntil of Washington (138), Jayden Laurent of Wisconsin (144), Sidney Kimber of Alaska (164) and Alexandra Castillo of California (200).

Laurent has been very successful on the Senior level this year, winning a silver medal at U.S. Open and placing second at the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, which gives her a spot on the Senior Women’s National Team.

2017 Junior National women’s runners-up in the brackets are Cameron Guerin of Washington (122), Breanna Douglas of Kansas (132), Alara Boyd of Indiana (138), Jerzie Estrada of Colorado (144), Jesse Kirby of Virginia (180) and Jasmin Clark of California (180).

Of the 2018 Cadet Nationals champions from Sunday night, nine have entered the Junior division: Sage Mortimer of Utah (100), Mia Palumbo of Illinois (106) , Adriana Dorado-Marin of Colorado (117) , Alexys Zepeda of Oregon (122), Jahnea Miguel of Hawaii (138) , Nevaeh Cassidy of Washington (144), Tristan Kelly of Colorado (164), Jaycee Foeller of Missouri (180) and Olivia Brown of Oklahoma (200). Last year in Fargo, Shilson and Kilty were the only athletes to win both the Junior and Cadet Nationals. Will there be more this year?

We have been listing the returning All-Americans in our previews in the previews. There are many more of them in the women’s draw than in the previous tournaments already held (and in the styles expected the rest of the week). The top women really have decided to show up to test themselves. For some, it will be the last event of their high school careers, before moving on to college or the international ranks. For the underclassmen, this will be a big event for next year’s rankings as well as for recruiting for future college opportunities. Let the fur fly!!!

Only Michigan’s Adam Coon has won two Junior Triple Crowns. He faces a tough finals against 2017 Cadet National champion Nash Hutmacher of South Dakota. Cassioppi beat Hutmacher, 3-1, in the finals at the Junior Folkstyle Nationals

* The finals at 106 features a pair of 2017 Junior National champions, freestyle champion Wil Guida of New Jersey against Greco-Roman champion Anthony King of Illinois. There were four 2017 Junior freestyle champions in the field, but only Guida and Cassioppi survived to make the finals.

* West Fargo’s own Jared Franek will be in the finals at 160 pounds, where the Team North Dakota star will battle Danny Braunagel of Illinois.

* Defending team champion Illinois will run away with the Junior freestyle team title, with eight in the finals and another 12 in the consis, holding a safe lead over a strong Ohio, with four in the finals and nine in the consis.
