FARGO, N.D. - A pair of 2017 Cadet National champions were beaten in the first round of a crazy morning session as the U.S. Marine Corps Cadet Nationals began on Saturday, with competition for both men and women.
2017 Cadet National champion Brelane Huber of Idaho lost a wild 16-14 shootout in the opening round at 112 pounds to Carmen Allred of Texas. Huber held a No. 6 national ranking coming into Fargo this year.
Huber powered back in the consolation rounds, beating Jazzy Toll of Pennsylvania and 2017 Cadet Nationals runner-up Tayrn Martin of Ohio, 5-3. Martin, ranked No. 3 in the nation, lost to Ally Fitzgerald of New York 8-4 in round two, and is now eliminated from the tournament.
2017 Cadet National champion Nia Miranda of Texas was also knocked off in the opening round, losing to nationally ranked No. 9 Emmily Patneaud of California, 6-3. Miranda remains alive in the consolations, with a chance to wrestle back for third.
They were the only two returning champions in the women’s draw, meaning there will not be any athletes able to repeat from last year.
With Martin’s loss, only two of the four returning Cadet runners-up in the field have advanced to the quarterfinals, Kenzie Cormier of Washington at 112 and Ryan Schlereth of Missouri (200). Schlereth had a bye in the first session, and will compete for the first time in session two. 2017 Cadet runner-up Sophia Smith of North Dakota, ranked No. 12 in the nation, finished with a 1-2 record at 122 pounds and was eliminated.
The boys tournament has reached the round of 32 in each weight class. A full report on the Cadet Nationals for men will be posted this evening.
