ZAGREB, Croatia – U.S. Cadet World representative at 92 kg Jacob Kaminski wrapped up the 2018 World Championships, winning the first and only medal of the tournament for the Greco-Roman squad, when he claimed bronze on Sunday in Zagreb, Croatia.

“I’m feeling pretty good. I really wanted to do something, especially for my team,” Kaminski said. “The first day was rough for the first five guys, and the second day was the same. I just wanted to represent us well and show that the team really put in work. I thought we deserved at least a medal, if not a couple of medals. I’m really happy that it was me that could do that for the team.”

Kaminski took on 2018 Cadet European bronze medalist Richard Karelson of Estonia in the World third-place match.

Karelson scored first in the match on passivity, but Kaminski hustled in the last moments of the first period to get a step out and lead on criteria, 1-1.

In the final two minutes, Karelson attempted four different throws, but it was Kaminski who wrestled his way on top each time to snag four takedowns and a 9-1 technical fall.

To get to the bronze-medal match Kaminski defeated 2017 Cadet European bronze medalist Davyd Samsonov of Ukraine in a 9-6 battle.

Samsonov led 4-3 at the break with Kaminski scoring on an attempted throw by Samsonov and on a later reversal. Kaminski hit a beautiful five-point throw, but it was about half a second too late as the period had ended.

In the second period, Samsonov extended his lead but Kaminski responded with a takedown and gut wrench to go up 7-6. In the closing seconds of the match, Samsonov went for a throw, but Kaminski landed on top to wrap up a 9-6 win and advance to the bronze match.

Phillip Moomey, the U.S. representative at 60 kg, wrestled in repechage action prior to the medal matches. In his first bout, he took on Vladislav Karasev of Russia.

Karasev run out to an early lead, holding a 6-0 advantage over Moomey at the break. The Nebraska native continued to fight, scoring on a step out and a later front head lock throw for four points, but it was not enough as he eventually fell 8-5, ending his tournament.

In the team race, USA finished 16th with 23 points. Iran won gold with 130 points, followed by Russia with 108 and Turkey with 91 for silver and bronze, respectively.
