2016 World champion Logan Stieber, shown at the 2017 Beat the Streets Benefit, will battle at 65 kg at the Yarygin Grand Prix on Saturday,
KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Nine U.S. wrestlers, including seven men and two women, have weighed in and received their draw for the second day of the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix, which will occur on Saturday.
The men’s division at the Ivan Yarygin is a UWW ranking tournament, which will help determine the seeds at the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
EDITOR’S NOTE: When the official men’s brackets were posted, an additional athlete was added to the draw at 65 kg, Bonne of Cuba, which changed the U.S. pairings for the first round for two athletes, 2016 World champion Logan Stieber (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) and Josh Kindig (Durham, N.C./Sunkist Kids/Tar Heel WC).
The edited story below includes these changes. The Russians have had wrestle-off matches to determine their entries in some weight classes.
Stieber will open against Nurgazy Abdurazakov of Kyrgyzstan, who was seventh in 2013 Junior Worlds. Kindig will now face a Russian athlete, which will be determined by a wrestle-off on Saturday morning.
2017 World bronze medalist Nick Gwiazdowski (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack RTC) opens against a Russian wrestler. The draw sheet indicated he could face two-time World Military champion Alan Khugaev of Russia, but that may not be the case based upon the wrestle-off.
Four-time NCAA champion and Freestyle Team USA member Kyle Dake (Ithaca, N.Y./Titan Mercury WC/Finger Lakes WC) is the only U.S. entry at 79 kg/174 lbs. He opens with 2013 Junior World champion Alan Zaseev of Russia.
There are three U.S. entries at 65 kg, a weight with 22 entries. Joining Stieber and Kindig is Jayson Ness (Bloomington, Minn./Minnesota Storm), who drew Kenessary Baltash of Kazakhstan.
There are also three U.S. entries at 125 kg. Two U.S. athletes are in the bottom bracket, 2015 World Team member Zach Rey (Northampton, Pa./Lehigh Valley WC) and Bobby Telford (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC). Rey opens with 2016 Asian bronze medalist Farkhod Anakulove of Tajikistan. Telford drew Tuguldur Enkhbaatar of Mongolia, who was second in the 2011 Asian Cadets.
If Rey and Telford both win their first match, they will face each other in the second round.
The women’s tournament, which is not a ranking tournament, is loaded with many top Russians and athletes from many other tough nations.
2016 U.S. Olympian Haley Augello (Lockport, Ill. (New York AC) opens with 2017 Military World champion Otgonjargal Ganbaatar of Mongolia at 53 kg/116 lbs.
Defending Ivan Yarygin champion Tamyra Stock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) will open her competition at 68 kg/149 lbs. against young Mai Hayakawa of Japan, who was 10th in the 2016 Junior Worlds.
U.S. fans will be able to watch the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix live for free on Trackwrestling. Krasnoyarsk is 12 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time.
When they are available, brackets from Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix will be posted to USA Wrestling’s Twitter at:
