KRASNOYARSK, Russia – The brackets have now been posted for the women’s division at the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix, which starts on Friday.
There are four weight classes contested for women on Friday. Two U.S. women wrestlers weighed in to compete on Friday, two-time World silver medalist Alli Ragan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and two-time World Team member Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 50 kg/110 lbs.
Ragan drew into the top bracket of a 12-athlete weight class, and advances directly into the quarterfinals, where she will face Uliana Tukurenova of Russia. Tukurenova was ninth in the 2017 U23 Worlds and third in the 2017 Russian Nationals.
Should Ragan win, she gets the winner of the Alena Sangadieva (Russia) vs. Bilyan Dudova (Bulgaria) quarterfinal.
Anthony drew into the bottom half of a 24-athlete weight class. She opens Hyangmi Hong of North Korea in her opener. Anthony has five Russian athletes in her half-bracket, as well as two-time defending Yarygin Grand Prix champion Yuki Irie of Japan, who also boasts Junior and University World titles.
Anthony won two Junior World titles earlier in her career.
The men’s competition at the Ivan Yarygin is a Ranking Tournament, while the women’s division is not. The Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix for women is traditionally one of the best international meets in the world each year, and only six U.S. women wrestlers have ever won it.
The U.S. men’s team has four entries in the tournament, and a separate story has been posted.
