Dieringer wins gold, three others claim medals at Outstanding Ukrainian Memorial
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
KIEV, Ukraine – Alex Dieringer won USA’s lone gold medal in men’s freestyle at the Outstanding Ukrainian Memorial with a decisive win in the 79 kg/174 lbs. final on Sunday in Kiev, Ukraine.
For the title, Dieringer faced off against 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Yabrail Hasanov of Azerbaijan.
A two-time National Team member and three-time NCAA champion, Dieringer gave up a shot-clock point early in the bout but responded with three takedowns to cruise to a 7-3 victory for gold.
Dieringer went 5-0 on the weekend, outscoring the competition 42-5.
Three other Americans won medals on the final day of men’s freestyle competition, including silver from J’den Cox and bronzes from Joe Colon and Riley Lefever.
Olympic and World bronze medalist Cox, who advanced to the 92 kg/202 lbs. finals, was pitted against 2012 Olympic champion, 2011 World champion and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Sharif Sharifov of Azerbaijan.
Despite leading the first period, 6-2, Cox came away with silver after Sharifov stormed back in the second, outlasting the American in an 8-7 match.
At 61 kg/134 lbs., 2017 Dave Schultz Memorial champion and past National Team member Colon rolled to a solid 9-4 win over 2017 Yasar Dogu champion Galib Aliyev of Azerbaijan, 9-4, to take home a bronze medal.
Four-time Div. III NCAA champion and 2017 Dave Schultz bronze winner Riley Lefever claimed his second medal in his young international career. After falling to teammate Cox in yesterday’s semifinals at 92 kg, Lefever bounced back with a 14-4 tech fall against Shamir Atyan of Armenia in the third-place match.
Overall, the U.S. men’s freestyle team returns with six medals, including one gold, two silvers and three bronzes, and three other top-five finishes.
