HAVANA, Cuba – Minnesota men Zach Sanders and Hayden Zillmer walked away from the 2018 Cerro Pelado International with gold medals in their possession following powerful efforts on Thursday afternoon.
Sanders, a Pan American champion in 2014, was sharp throughout his 57 kg/125 lbs. gold-medal fight against returning Cerro Pelado bronze medalist Alexei Alvares of Cuba. He trailed 1-0 at the break before reeling off six second-period points to snag the U.S. its first gold medal of the day.
“I was just really excited to compete. It’s been a while. I watched him wrestle a little bit and I kind of had a game plan. It didn’t really go the way I wanted, but I knew if I stayed on him he’d wear down a little bit. It worked out in my favor,” Sanders said.
In a 97 kg/213 lbs. rematch from day one pool play, Zillmer succeeded in taking out U23 World bronze medalist and U.S. teammate Ty Walz for the second time in as many days. A first period low level takedown, transitioned into two leg lace turns, gave Zillmer the 6-0 win.
Gunslinger Cody Brewer found himself on the wrong end of a 16-6 technical fall when he battled two-time World bronze medalist Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez of Cuba in the 61 kg/134 lbs. finals. Brewer picked up two big takedowns to start the match with a 6-0 lead. The Cuban methodically reeled of 16-straight points to ice the match.
2015 Pan American champion Jason Chamberlain and two-time Pan American champion Franklin Maren of Cuba successfully neutralized one another throughout the 70 kg/154 lbs. finals. Each man earned a shot clock point, Chamberlain in the first period and Maren in the second, to account for all scoring in the bout. Maren earned gold on criteria, 1-1.
Up-and-coming heavyweight Ben Durbin ran into the Taha Akgul buzz saw in the 125 kg/275 lbs. gold-medal match. The 2016 Olympic champion and two-time World champion would not be denied in an 11-0 win.
Things escalated quickly in the 65 kg/143 lbs. finals as 2017 World bronze medalist Alejandro Valdes Tobier of Cuba locked up multiple inside trip attempts in the first big flurry of the bout to take it 10-0 over young American Robbie Mathers.
U.S. wrestlers who battled back to claim bronze medals were Johnni DiJulius at 61 kg, Anthony Abidin at 65 kg, Hunter Stieber at 70 kg, Don McNeil at 92 kg/213 lbs. and Nathan Burak at 97 kg.
